Going shopping with $1400

Headed to GC (I know). Have about $1400 in store credit.

I'm thinking about picking up a Squier Classic Vibe 70's P-Bass and a Vintage Modified Jazz Bass.

I'm not opposed to something higher end.

What would you buy with $1400?

One nice bass

Or a few budget basses $400-500

If you already have a bass, I would spend that on an amp and cab...with a couple pedals.

That aside and addressing only the specifics in the OP? I'd buy the nicest bass I could with it.

Without any information here or in your profile about what you have now and what you intend to do with it, you shouldn't expect any meaningful responses.
So here is my worthless response:

I have a Markbass Mini CMD 112. I am not in a gigging band. That amp combo is more than I'll ever need.

I got into pedals a few years back. Gets expensive quick. And I found it forced me to be a better bassist without them. Most of what I play with friends doesn't require any effects.

First bass I owned I couldn't tell you what brand. Cheap amazon brand. Two active pickups. Didn't care for it.

Bought a Gibson SG bass and haven't really looked much since. I actually prefer Short Scale basses.

Just bored on a Sunday with cash to burn. I think I'm actually going to return the $800 acoustic guitar and not get store credit.

So $600 bass you would buy?

I would add some funds and get a Ric, a US Geddy Jazz, or a American Professional Jazz.

That's what I did. Bought Mustang PJ. Returned acoustic for refund of $800

I would buy a Rickenbacker 4003S.

If they have one in stock, check out a Gretsch Junior Jet short-scale. $299 new and a huge amount of bass for the money. If they have a used one with the single pickup in the sweet spot that's even better. IMO the single pickup version is actually better sounding than their newer 2-pickup models and one of the best kept secrets (and bargains) out there for short-scale basses. Bank the rest of that cash and call it a day.

I personally would buy 1 nice bass. I really love my Brute and don't need another one, but if I had 1400 burning a hole in my pocket I'd get a nice 5 string jazz bass.

I applaud you on your modest choices. Both of those basses would give you a wide tonal range and allow you to keep quite a bit of cash in your pocket.

Nothing wrong with the Vintage Modified and Classic Vibe Squiers.

Not to knock GC (well, maybe a bit), but there is nothing at the local GC that I would buy in that price range.

If I had to spend it all, I'd probably buy a keyboard of some kind.
