Great! I lived on the upper westside for many years—longer than anywhere else I have lived. It still seems like home, despite the terrible gentrification that has wiped away much of its character.

I was also an occasional student at Mannes School of Music, which joined the New School and moved from uptown to w. 13th street several years ago.

It was ear training courses at Mannes extension division that I really made me a good reader and confident in 1, 2, and 4 part dictation. I hope the pedagogical legacy of Marie Powers and Renee Longy still lives on. It included fixed Do with several volumes of Danhauser/Lemoine's Solfeggio solfeggios, Bona's Rhythmic Articulation for rhythmic reading and transposition/clef reading with soprano, treble, mezzo, alto, tenor and bass clefs, and a remarkable approach to dictation that I used throughout my teaching career.

Thanks for the welcome! I've had bad experiences with combos thus-far. They don't seem to have as much power for how heavy they are and they don't sound as good in my opinion. Especially with double bass, the tone isn't quite right and they can be really booming. I've already tried the fender rumble, acoustic, Ibanez and a handful of others, and wasn't very impressed. As for my budget I was hoping to do this around $1500 but I can go a little higher for the perfect rig. I think multiple cabs and crazy expensive, hand-wired, boutique heads are out of the question.

A combo is a bad idea, you are going to find a lot of house cabs with the bring your own head arrangement in NYC.
