Are you trying to give an old man a heart attack, or does this really say LaBella is prototyping tapewounds in 20" U-Bass length as well as 23" Micro-bass?
Tape wound strings for U-Bass in 2014 would be a wish come true for me.
LaBella black nylons are my favorite strings, I have them on three of my long-scale basses, and always wished they made them for my short scale non-Hofner axes.

Yes, they are working on tapewounds for the GT MicroBass and the U-Bass as well.
They now offer black and white (actually clear) tapewounds in long, medium and short scale in regular and light gauges, as well as special sets for "beatle" basses. The white tapewounds are very smooth playing and they're brighter sounding than the blacks.
The white tapes are fantastic strings. Smooth is an understatement, and indeed brighter than the black tapes. I'm torn on whether or not I'll put them on my fretted micro. I'm lovin my pahoehoe/thundergut hybrid set. I'll wait and see what sbassman's stealth bass is all about before I consider buying another micro in fretless.
Don't wait for me. While the investment has been made, there is much ahead. Build time, testing, possibly a second round, and then, the production build. It will take time.
If a man has so much a passion for sub-shortscale basses that he's creating his own for sale to the public, I think that's worth waiting for. I'm incredibly inpatient, but I'll wait. I have a feeling it'll be worth it.
I won't play without metal strings. Just a personal preference. Kala said the sub couldn't use metal strings so I lost interest. I'm about to buy a Snapdragon eBass but I could easily be interested in the Stealth. I will be keeping an eye on you

And La Bella white tapes on fretless is something anyone remotely interested in fretless needs to experience.
Yup. I had them on a Yamaha fretless. I stink without frets, but the white tapes give you mwah for days. Amazing strings. I wonder what gauge they'll be for the micro.
Do you mean reinforced inside for high tension?

But, I really don't understand how one is supposed to install these strings anyway. There's no back hatch, so it seems you have to feed the end in through the sound hole and maneuver it back through the bridge holes? Seems like a pain in the butt.
Now that I think about it, I really don't want metal or tapewounds on my acoustic. Maybe when sbassman's solid body comes out I'll use metal strings for that.
The petrochemical strings are what makes the microbass and others like it special, IMO.

I will get an official response from Gold Tone, but that will be not this coming week but next.
I believe the answer is going to be - it's fine. There are 3 different parties that have participated in the metal string work on a Gold Tone MicroBass: Gold Tone, LaBella, and me. There is likely to be a 4th party at some point.
I have a fretless model. This is my first bass so I have no experience with what a bass should sound and feel like.... It is a really fun instrument to play. I got it to play bass lines with my daughter while she is playing Uke.
It feels like the exact size of the mahogany Baby Taylor guitar I used to own but with the cutaway. Construction is very similar. I wonder if it is made in the same factory in China?

I think it has roughly the same dimensions.
You've been on talkbass for 4 years and this is your first bass? I'm not judging, but it's a unique instrument with unique strings. The transition to a "normal" bass should be interesting for you.

Yep... Joined Talk Bass a couple years ago when I was thinking of trying my hand on a Double Bass. Mostly interested in jazz.... I could never justify the cost and size of a DB. Fairly recently discovered the UBass on YouTube. Did some searching and decided on the Gold Tone Micro as it was fretless, had a longer scale length, cutaway body design and the Aquilla strings (I have always been a fan of Aquilla strings on Banjos and Ukuleles).
It is a really cool instrument and well suited for the mostly acoustic environment that I play.
I may be hooked. I keep picking up the Micro Bass... it is getting a lot of playing time....
