Good Basses?

If you feel the need to ask such an open-ended question, I advise you not to spend $1000 on a bass. For that kind of investment, you should be getting a keeper that will really be what you want, and a question like yours says, you don't really know what you want. Put most of that money in the bank and buy a used low- or mid-level version of one of the "usual suspects". If you like it, great: sell it and take your money and get a good version. If you don't sell it and buy a low- to mid-level version of something else. Repeat until you find one you really feel at home with. Then, if you still want input, post a more specific question, e.g., "I'm ready to move up from [low- to mid-level bass X]; what's something like that but higher quality etc.?" THAT will get you useful suggestions.

"What's a good bass for $1000 or less?" All of them, to somebody for something.

Good point.
