Good bassist, bad tone

Sorry all, but for me it's Lemmy Killmister. Love the dude and respect the skills, but the tone... yikes. I know he is not your traditional bassist though.

I really love Motorhead but I agree that a Rick played through a distorted Marshall stack sounds like crap.

How about the other way, mark hoppus of blink a simple root note player, nothing amazing, but killer tone from his ebmm ray days to the sig fender always through ampeg. It is the perfect rock/punk rock tone with a pick.

I will say the new metallica bassist is tight, probably a better bassist, but I think newsteads tone was way better

+1 for Andy Rourke. The thing is that I actually feel his tone doesn't fit the Smiths as a whole, not talking about the tone by itself. I think a mellower tone would complement the songs much better.

Whenever I listen There Is a Light That Never Goes Out I can't help thinking it should be re-recorded with a new bass track. The same line, but with a different tone.

I like Rourke and while it's not a tone i'd go for, i always found it suited The Smiths fine.

Rudy makes a great rock star....looks good, plays good, plays with good bands...but his tone on this live Ozzy albums is just....wrong.

He was actually quite underrated-- most of his Type O stuff was far below his capabilities of speed and technicality, but it was very effective-- and had a "tone" that was a trademark.

Yep, Flea... Dude's got funky chops and feel and taste, and I love his aggressive approach to playing bass. But his tone his not that great... at all.

I don't think he really cared about his sound as was more product of the 80s. One of my favorites that's for sure.

My opinion?

Most of the Jazz guys that are loved around here. Not my thing. Boring solos and thin, mellow tone where everybody just stands there looking at them without rocking at all. I see the mega-talent for sure but again it's not my thing. I want to storm their stage with my MDB3 - Dual Firebass - Quad 15" Black Widow - Rat King blaring rig and melt their face.

OK I'll slink back to the Stoner/Doom thread now...

I should probably mention Jack Casady. I don't like his music anyway but can recognize he's a good bassist. But i find his tone horrible.
