Good Boost Pedal?

Since the Mk.4.23 has been mentioned already, I'd like to be a further "witness" to it's incredibly clean, uncolored, boost-ness, (24dB). This pedal has changed my life, I once was deaf, but now I hear...etc. Great pedal.

MXR Micro Amp, I forgot about this one. Besides working very well as a clean boost, it is simple, solid, and has a small footprint on floor. Excellent.

There are literally a hundred or more good boost pedals, and another hundred or more if you include EQ pedals (which make perfectly good boost pedals). So it comes down to:

--your budget
--visual aesthetic preferences
--clean or dirty boost
--single function or more versatile

FWIW the Ernie Ball pedal is not a boost, it's just like the volume knob on your bass except it's on the floor.

Totally agree here....This is just as subjective to personal taste as any other pedal or effect...I am a "clean" boost kinda guy, and have tried several, and am currently using the Serrano Picaso...which I think is a great little pedal...I'm kind of a fan of the single knob boost i guess...not that there's anything wrong with adding some EQ (I had an Xotic RC for a while and loved it too)...just a personal preference.

As also mentioned, the Lizard Leg Bluetail is a nice clean boost also...

That's an interesting piece of gear, The Blue Lizard. I like the one knob function for clean boost too.

From what the OP described, it sounds like the "one knob" approach would do the trick for his playing situation.

I play in an blues/rock/alternative band with one other guitarist, drummer and singer. I use a GK700RBII and a avatar 210 cabinet, Sterling by Musicman SB14, Modified Jazz bass, and a Fender MIM P bass, I also use a EBS Multicomp pedal... Basically there's some parts where I play melodic lead bass parts and the guitarist moves to rhythm. I'm not against a flexible pedal, perhaps something that can give me something a little more and more volume. I'm not looking to spend more than $120, and I'm not against used gear either.

I'm currently interested in the MK 4.23, and Xotic EP. Any more info and suggestions would be great. Thanks

haha, people mentioned the carl martin compressor, and the ODB-3. I have both of those, though I never really thought of the as boost pedals. I guess I have a lot of boost on my board. CM Comp, LS-2, ODB-3, LPB-1, and my pBDDI. i guess almost anything with 'level' on it could be used as a boost.

Well, the MK 4.23 is a transparent volume boost- eq and upstream drive remain the same.

The EP is a more colored boost, so your eq will be altered. There are internal dip switches to control the amount of additional emphasis of highs & lows, but even the "flat" setting is a little bit changed. More mid-forward. BBut, it still sounds cool! It might cause downstream preamps/processing to break up sooner.

^ haha, check the original post. And the volume knob on your bass will only cut signal, it will not boost it.

Another boost that's supposed to be super clean is the Zvex Super Hard On. I'm building a Super Duper (Two hard ons in one box) right now. It's pretty expensive for a boost, but if you can solder there's only like 10 parts in a hard on. Pretty easy build.

I heard their Super Chili Picoso is pretty great, too.

It is, especially with the 'fat' switch on.

Another one to check out is the Rust Boost by HAO, great pedal. It fattens up your sound a bit and when you push it in to OD you get a great snarly low gain type of sound, way cool.

So I'm still contimplating pedals, looking at the Xotic RC Booster, MK 4.23, Lizard Leg Bluetail, Serrano Picoso. Don't know much about the Super Chili Picoso.


there aren't to many videos of them on youtube, especially with a bass.
