Good Gospel Bass

Check out Fred Hammond CD's. Fred is a bass player, but now sings and hires great bass players like Maurice Fitzgerald and now Alan Snoop Evans. Another I like is Taddious Tribbet check out his brother Tye Tribbet DVD. Adrew Gouche is one of the biggest, but some complain because he is a busy bass player, oh but the stuff he plays is great. There's Al Turner and others. I just listen to Gospel and if I like what I hear I Google a bit and find out who playing.

There are so many great bassists playing gospel. Here are just a few:
-Simeon Baker, an amazingly versatile bassist, with Joe Pace
-Dwayne Wright and Keith Harper with Youthful Praise
-Keith Taylor(Donnie McClurkin, Kirk Franklin)
-Andrew Gouche(McClurkin, GMWA Mass Choir)
-Darrell Freeman(McClurkin)
-Abraham Laboriel(Ron Kenoly, McClurkin, not to mention numerous jazz, fusion, R&B, etc. recordings)
-Terrance Palmer(Fred Hammond, Martha Munizzi, Byron Cage, Israel & New Breed)
-Maurice Fitzgerald(Fred Hammond, Vashawn Mitchell, Darius Brooks, DeAndre Patterson, Marvin Sapp, Kurt Carr, Micah Stampley)
-And, of course, the man who, in my opinion, really redefined the concept of gospel bass-and gospel in genreral-Fred Hammond

There are so many more! Joel Smith and James Neuble come to mind. Listen to as many of the above mentioned bassists as possible and to as much gospel as possible!!

Glory to Glory! Whew, I used to wake up every morning to that song the last time I lived in Korea. That one gets the blood pumping, listening to a busy groove that drives the entire song. Definitely need to know your scales to emulate that one. That song is on the second disc of the double CD "Pages of Life: Chapters 1 & 2" and the second disc is also available as a DVD, "Fred Hammond and Radical for Christ - Live DVD," where you can see the bassist in action. He plays that whole DVD sitting down, I can't even sit down for one song in my room when playing it!

Yeah thats pretty much my list as well. And being from N.C. I must advise checking out some gospel quartets, like the Canton Spirituals, Jackson Southernaires, or Williams Brothers. They contain a very basic gospel style that seems simple but really puts you in the feel of where the music is coming from. Also check out some Jon P. Kee. He always keeps slamming musicians, and alot of his music incorporates much of the turn arounds that are prevalent in alot of gospel (esp. vamps).

*The Annointed Pace Sisters-Return(CD/DVD), especially on "High Praise" !
*The William Murphy Project-All Day
*Bishop Eddie Long-A New Beginning

Darrell is an amazing bassist and has a great sound on his Ken Smith!

Darrell is great he is amazing i go to the church he plays at sometimes and he's always blowing me away
