Zoom H5 here. Similar to the H6 but with 2 less inputs. My thinking on the H6 was that with that many inputs you might want to be taking a laptop anyway.

Previously I had a Blue Mic into my iPhone which was a great solution UNTIL Apple changed the iPhone connection. I now have a perfectly great stereo mic sitting in my top drawer. Lesson #1 - if apple changes their spec your clip in mic becomes a paper-weight.

Also *ironically* the Zoom has MUCH better integration with the Mac OS than the iPhone. To transfer files off the iPhone required a mess of exporting audio files through apps in iTunes. With the Zoom you put the micro disk in the back of your iMac and use the finder to transfer files.

It might be better now but this iTunes file transfer clusterf**k was a deal-breaker for iPhone recording for me.

I use air drop to get video from the iPad to the desktop Mac. It's been great. No idea if you can do this with audio files.

The drawback to all the mic-for-iPhone/iPad systems I've seen is that you have to handle the recorder (phone or tablet) to start recording. The same is true for the Zoom H2. I have one and love it, but if I could add one feature, it would be a remote. Being able to setup the recorder, position it where you want it, and then start and stop without disturbing it again is a very handy feature. Makes life very nice. Also, the Zoom H2n has the most flexible set of mic patterns I know of in a modest-priced recorder. It will do mid-side stereo, X-Y stereo, omni, and cardioid (by collapsing the side of the mid-side down to zero; easy software function). If only the user could turn off the cardioid in mid-side, it would do figure-8 too but, alas, the software won't do that. For a handy portable recorder under $200.00, I always recommend the Zoom H2n.

I have this one: Shure MV88 Digital Stereo Condenser Microphone for iOS

Maybe overkill for what you want, but it sounds great. Lots of post production options, way more than I could figure out how to use.

I second this.. the Shure works great with the iPhone and MOTIV Software and file easily transferred over via email or airdrop. This really good for the price for everything.

I've used Zoom and Tascam units and am sure they will do the job well. Some cell phones capture decent sound recordings as well, but i find it can differ unit to unit.

Very cool! Just curious, what app do you use for audio on the iPhone?.

I use the Tascam app. It is free. Works great. Only drawback is that you have to have SoundCloud to load up your files.

For the OP: any handheld recorder will do for recording practice sessions. Or use an app on your phone. I also have the Tascam dr-05. Works great but unfortunately only operates on batteries no adapter.
