No real gripes against Fender... i just like being "that ONE guy" at shows that doesn't play a fender. Just not a fan of their ubiquiety, no matter how earned it is.
Also, no real price point, just looking into my options.
I DO have a soft spot for cool Japanese models. In fact a beautiful (looking at least) Hondo P is on the local CL right now.
Also, Any thoughts on a G&L SB-1?
D'oh... I keep forgetting Lakland even MAKES a P... i always associate them with Jazzes.
To me if you're going for the "I don't want to another guy playing a Fender" thing, you might as well forget the Lakland, Sadowsky, blah blah blah (insert Fender looking bass here) because from 15 feet away, everyone is going to think it's a Fender anyhow.
Personally, I'd check out an older Ibanez Roadstar or something similar. They are basicly a P bass, but have a different look.
I'm a pretty hard core P bass guy myself, but I'd gladly rock a Ibby Roadstar with a Lollar split coil pickup installed. That would make for a great "different" P bass IMO, and won't break the bank.
For Gig quality.. a Fury (usa made with split P) will out play any of my fenders.. a Milestone is a great gig bass (imported - good used option)..
1. There was an Epiphone ripper bass that had a P/J pickup set.

THIS is more or less what i'm going for. (Not that i'd scoff at the oppertunity to nab a Lakland/Sadowsky/G&L/ or even a Fender) But something that gives me the P tone, without being, necessisarily, a Fender.
Also, funky headstocks don't really bother me. In fact, the 80's hockey-stick headstocks are becoming increasingly 'cool and hip'.
Well, you could get this one. Sure, it's a PJ setup, but you could roll off (or remove) the Jazz pickup and rock out ! Plus nobody would think you were playing a Fender.

Ohh... good point to ask... what are the differences between the split P Fury and the slanty single pup Fury? I saw a guy at a show recently play the slanty pup version and it soundid amazing.
