Good non-Fender P?

Hey all,

Just to be 'that guy', what are the options out there for a good sounding P that is not Fender-made?

Old? New?

Jay Tursers happen to be outstanding instruments for the price. I only ever had one, so I don't know about any QC issues, but I know that it was more P than quite a few P's I've played.

70's Japanese copies. Tokai and Greco come to mind and can be bought on ebay.

I played a Skyline Lakland Duck Dunn over the weekend - hell of a bass and had a nice P growl.

Actually I have a mid 80's Ibanez Roadstar that is a great non Fender P.

best P i ever played was a USA Lakland Bob Glaub... it was basically mindblowingly good. Had it cost under $3000 i might have considered buying it, haha. The skyline's are also incredibly good though, if its in your price range at all you should definitely consider one.

Price range would help. There are a number of good alternatives at pretty much every price point.

Speaking from experience Sandbergs are sweet. they nail the P tone and feel spot on, with the added joy of the MM pickup and a bypassable 2 band clean as crystal eq.

Depending on your price range...US Lakland, Lakland Skyline, '80s Tokai Hard Puncher and Squier Classic Vibe. IMO.

I had a US BG P/J. Nice bass, but didn't feel it sounded much like my Fender P. Not bad, just different.

id actually say try rebulding your own.... more control on what you want

parts are cheep and you can usually come away with what you want for less

No real gripes against Fender... i just like being "that ONE guy" at shows that doesn't play a fender. Just not a fan of their ubiquiety, no matter how earned it is.

Also, no real price point, just looking into my options.

I DO have a soft spot for cool Japanese models. In fact a beautiful (looking at least) Hondo P is on the local CL right now.


Also, Any thoughts on a G&L SB-1?

D'oh... I keep forgetting Lakland even MAKES a P... i always associate them with Jazzes.
