Good solid Portable amp

Parents getting a divorce, need to sell all my equipment so I can be more portable. Right now I got an 8x10 and that has to go. So I need something small (4x10 is the limit), yet very loud and very powerful.. Price is not a concern. What is the best?

well, first off, sorry to hear about the home situation, hopefully it won't have too much impact on you and your life. good luck with that.

As far as more portable amps, there are just a slew of high quality, low weight, high output amps out there right now. Think Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0, Shuttle Max 12 (2 600w amps!), Mesa M9, Markbass SD 1200 or Little Mark 800, GK, Carvin .. etc etc.. the list goes on and on.

As far as cabs go, Neo's will be your friend. If 4x10 is really a must, but portability is key, you might want to think about 2 (or 3) 2x10's instead. You get more modular and still have a "4x10" when needed. There is no end of relatively light weight neo loaded cabs on the market right now too from the same names l listed above for amps.

Another way to go is to look at some of the killer pro level combos available and add an extension cab for gigs. Example would be a Mesa Venture 2x10 combo with an added 2x10 extension cab. Keep the extension at your rehearsal space and just move the combo. You get a pro level 600w amp driving either 2x10s stand alone, or 2 2x10's with the extension. Easy to move, tons of power, great tone .. what's not to like? Other manufacturers have similar pro line combos too.

Ultimately, while we can make broad suggestions, you need to decide what gear fits your plating situation best. The good news is that with few limits on cost, you will have no problem finding something that will work for you.

good luck

sorry about the parents, but trust me, if they're not getting along, you'll all be better for it. just don't take sides and show them both lots of love and they'll do you the same.

btw, another vote for a two 210 rig.

Life gets ugly sometimes, sorry about that. I've got 2 kids that grew up in seperate houses, mostly their mom's, but they're ok fine now. Just keep focused on your goals, and go with the flow. As for a bass amp, there's lots of really nice, and powerful combo's out these days. Try to get out to a GC or someplace for an afternoon. It'd make for a nice break for you, too. Best of luck to you, it's always worst at the beginning, it get's much easier down the road.

I recommend having a BFM cabinet built. Get 2 or 3 Jack 110s. I got 2, VERY loud. Eachg one is only 15"x18"x20" and light enough to cary in one hand. 2 of them is loud enough to be heard over a loud drummer and guitarist using a 350 watt GenzBenz head. If you don't want to build them yourself, there are some good builders at the BFM site. I used Greg at Magnum Caseworks, and recommend him highly. Great cabinets, GREAT service!

Good news, I can keep my gear (stored away amongst houses). Bad news is I still gotta ditch the big 8x10 (no big loss tho).

I am highly interested in The mesa now.. But Mesa are NOT light. But the G-K MB212 is something I am interested in. I am a big fan of American Made amps so the Mesa has my vote but access to playing the GK amps are easy so I gotta give them a shot. Thanks a lot for the input and the motivation. Focusing on these kind of things get my mind off of everything. This is what I love the most.

Good news! If you just want a cab the G-K NEO (212, 410), RBH and RBX are assembled in California. The cabs are made at the GK owned and operated plant in China (RBX and NEO). G-K makes 99% of all their own speakers. As far as where the speakers are made, in the US or the China plant I don't know. The RB series and Fusion amps are made in Cal. These are what I have heard from G-K employees and RAG (Robert A Gallien) himself. I believe the MB212 is made at the China plant but that maybe the head and cab only (not final assembly).
