I'm thinking about studying in Germany next spring, but I won't go if I can't get my bass over there (or rent one) and get lessons. I'd like to study as well. Does anyone know teachers in Germany? I've emailed Gottfried Engels, but I haven't heard back from him yet. Thanks a lot.

Double Bass Good teachers in Germany?

if you're going to Berlin, I've heard great things about Klaus Stoll in the Berlin Philharmonic, but he could be hard to get.
Bozo Paradzik is a great teacher that i learned everything about Bass playing from and can thank him about getting a job in Orchestra.
in his class are mostly young and very talented students from all over the world.

Bozo Paradzik in Freiburg is a teacher i learned everything about the Bass playing you can possibly learn .
After studying in the States(New York)for 4 years moving to Germany and meeting Bozo was a move of my life and can thank him dearly for getting a job in Orchestra

It's possible, he's around that age.
I know that the incredible Horst-Dieter Wenkel of the Weimar Hochschule is retiring next year. He taught many of Germany's principals, and his father taught Guenter Klaus BTW.
It looks like Paradzik is "the man" at the moment. He is really gracious too, a true gentleman. He is a fantastic teacher, and he plays just about anything on command, and how!!

I would be in Bielefeld, in Nordrhein-Westfalen. I'm not too worried about distance, though. Getting anywhere from Bielefeld shouldn't take more than 6 hours...no big deal.
The Detmold Hochschule is fantastic, it's a one hour train ride and they just got a new bass teacher replacing Paradzik. I don't know who actually got hired but I suspect it was Andreas Wylezol, first principal bass with the Dresden Staatskapelle. Andreas Wylezol is an incredible player, truly exceptional. If it is indeed him, you would do well going there. Detmold is a beautiful and dreamy little town, with a castle and a prince etc...
If it is somebody else, it will probably be a first class teacher/player. Teachers are very well paid in Detmold (they set their own salaries) so they usually get top people. It's one of the very best schools in the whole of Europe.
I've heard awesome things about the Dresden Staatskapelle...we at Central Michigan actually just had Dr. Richard Hughey audition for the joint MSO/CMU orchestrs position...I really liked him. He, as far as I know, is responsible for Dresden being as good as it is.
I agree, Dresden is one of my favorite orchestras.
Having said that, Dresden is one of the few orchestras left, in the world, that have a deep historic and audible tradition (even the Berlin Phil has lost it's traditional sound). I truly don't think that this person, or anyone else for that matter, can claim to be responsible for Dresden's grandiose and monumental artistry.
