If you steal his licks and use them at every gig, he's not really gone.

Absolutely! I still play and practice lines and parts I used to play with my friend. At one point I realized that, having lost a few other friends, I'm the only one who still knows these parts. It's a weird feeling. (If I meet up with him in the afterlife, he'll probably tell me I'm playing it wrong. )

IF it was up to me, they'd still be here. But . . . it wasn't up to me.

a grief counselor shared with me, we all experience it differently, all the emotions, different orders, different levels, triggers, timelines. We can't rush it. We can't avoid it either. Supposedly. He also said, eventually, it can help to start to synthesize all of that… To find a way to honor the friend.

Lyle Lloyd Lingle, a good friend from Miami Killian Sr. High School and my first 2 years of college passed away Monday.

He was one hell of a bass player and a cool dude. I doubt that I'd be playing bass today had he not provided the inspiration, but don't hold that against him.

He was a well known bass player in the South Florida area off and on for more than 40 years and will be sorely missed by his wife, kids, mom, family and many, many friends and compatriots.

My condolences for your loss.

I've buried my parents, grandparents, and I'm a widow from a previous marriage. Too many funerals.

I can only tell you two things they taught me:

IF it was up to me, they'd still be here. But . . . it wasn't up to me.

And that I can only trust these things are working to a plan I'll never know, and I have to have the faith that is the truth. I shall see them again one day.

sincere condolences on your loss and best wishes out to Lyle's family. It's hard to lose anyone meaningful in your life and as much as I hate to say it, at our advancing age, it's just going to happen more and more until someone is the last man standing.

Thank all of you for acknowledging him. As stated above, Lyle, as I called him, and Lloyd, as he was called by some, was an awesome man who, although he left too soon, lived a life of fullness, and he was loved by many and disliked by very few.

All of you, on behalf of Lyle's family and closest friends I offer heartfelt thanks for all the kind words and insightful comments.

He was, as stated very influential musically, and the times (good times to be sure) that our group of young guys shared in South Florida over 40 years ago, were memorable. Thankfully, we survived them.

That reminds me of a story he shared: Lyle once went to visit the grave of Duane Allman and as he was leaving, Greg Allman was approaching from his rear and momentarily freaked out a bit because with the long hair, Lyle resembled Greg's late brother.

Edit: Yes, he was the kind of guy who would have reveled in those pranks.
