GREAT thread! thanks for starting it , Joker ..
I have been groovin and praising DEEP with Fred Hammonds " Something 'Bout Love " cd- it's more r&b than Gospel, i guess, but it is so sweet, the production is awesome.. i got the same hunger, gotta find me more annointed music.. since I am listening to less and less secular music, i have to get educated to the mentioned artists and bassists- nothing like getting a dose of my two passions in one.. music and Jesus.

There is one cat that most have never heard of, Jamal Andrews. He plays with Clint Brown Ministries out of Florida. This cat is a mean player on a Ken Smith, deep pocket....deep, deep!!

These guys that have been mentioned are all simply amazing to me. I have only been playing for about 3-4 years now and they seem light years away but I'm faithfully plucking away! :bassist:

all of the Fred Hammond, Mary Mary, Kirk Franklin stuff is great, my ipod is full of these artists, but if you wanna take gospel into the woodshed, you should start by "taking it to da church."
a lot of the gospel that's been mentioned above is simply R&B (IMHO).

You liste to today's gospel music (and no, I don't mean the Gaither's type of gospel), and you'll find most of it's R & B, funk, or blues, influenced. It's everyepanding to include latin and jazz flavors as well.

Some of my new favorites (in addition the numerous artists mentioned) are Kirk Whalum (jazz gospel) and the Quiet Time Player (instrumental jazz gospel)

first off... ANDREW GOUCHE is the truth... period.. Best in gospel and if you are trying to really hear the bass get an album with him on it like Faithful Central. He gives his heart and soul throughout the whole cd.

Next get the Paul morton DVD. Nisan stewart, the md on the dvd, leads the praise team for my church and also is a drummer for nelly, mary j blige and producer (mya p. diddy)...

ALso it is pretty conservative as far as bass playing but the Soul seekers album is contemporary gospel quartet. Nisan is part of the soul seekers as well as warryn and teddy campbell (they are both married to the mary mary girls). Teddy is an awesome drummer (britney spears, and pretty much everyone else) but he lead sings in the soul seekers. Warryn was the MD for faithful central album but plays bass for the soul seekers. Me and a friend rode with nisan up to a soul seekers rehearsal in north hollywood and man... the individual skill level of all of them is unbelievable. 4 of the best musicians in gospel.. jubu, charlie warryn and E seats (who also goes to my church and produces for 702, missy, timbaland, lalah hathaway) The soul seekers recorded their album at church and of course they killed. Warryn is no gouche but his fills and his energy on the bass is unmatched.

Gouche was the house bassist for my church when we had our mary mary concert... Seeing him live is a dream come true. He was way too busy on "friend of God" by israel but when we did "all around" He killed unbelievably. So many great bass players I've seen but none like gouche. He also played when my pastor's wife, janet stewart died (at the service the day before the wedding, we just called her sister stewart). This is the same lady that mary mary dedicated their single "heaven" to.

well, again, most of the popular gospel is R&B now.
i think musically speaking, the lines have been blurred.

and of course, it's commonplace for R&B artists and even "gansta" rappers to do whatever they want, and then thank God when they accept their MTV award for Most Bling Bling Video or whatever.

i'm not judging anybody... just stating my observation that it's no longer a contradiction to have one's feet firmly planted in both worlds. Unlike in the days of Ray Charles and Marvin Gaye when it was controversial.

Not necessarily true, but I see your point. As to the 2nd issue, I don't mean to preach, but I disagree...my proof...

and if that wasn't enough, here's another....

..."you cannot serve 2 Masters..."

yeah, I think it's a contradiction, but I'm not the one judging since I have faults of my own and don't want to point out "mote's in my brother's eye when I have a beam in my own" (I play in a jazz/blues band...instrumentals mostly)

WOW!! thanks for all these recommendations guys, I made a "station" on pandora.com and I've been pretty much listening all day in work..damn but these guys are fantastic..(and I dont mean just the bassists..the drumming absolutely kills as well).

Now thats how 5ers should be played.. :)

Seriously I am so digging this stuff..great arrangements..phenomenal musicians/singers..no wonder these guys are so in demand as session musicians.

Having said what I just did, and perhaps proving myself to be the ultimate hypocrit, I will add that only God can judge a man's heart. My impression could be mistaken.

On a lighter note, I just realized the Kurt Carr does "God, Great God." We did that for a special music Sunday at church and I had no idea whose song that was. I just got introduced to gospel a relatively short time ago and haven't been playing for very many years anyway so getting tossed into some of this music has been a great challenge, but so much fun. Figuring out John P. Kee's "Oh How Wondrous," "At the Cross," and "He's the Greatest" by ear was (for me) quite a learning experience! But man, I LOVE this music now. I just picked up Kim Burrell's Try Me Again. . . whoo, there's some serious playing on that! Gotta get that DVD too...........

too true, gruuv man...

but i've seen a charlie rose / PBS interview w/ Kanye, and he doesnt believe in the same God that his sample in "Jesus Walks" boasts. :hmm: he's sorta making up his own "religion" as he goes along, rather than finding a relationship.

to the rest of the thread...

still, i'm sure there are LOTS of great artists out there who believe in the good Lord, and yet dont veer off into the abyss. non-gospel guys like Sufjan Stevens and Brother Danielson come to mind. yet, the industry has too many temptations, and its easy to see why many fall. its the nature of the beast, so to speak. but again, like gruuv mentioned, we're not the ones to judge. ultimately, its the ultimate one.

still, crossing over w/ music that has a strong spiritual message CAN cross over. look at Matisyahu. he's a freakin' hasidic jew in full hasidic dress, rockin' the mic reggae/dancehall style, and yet he's selling packed colleges and clubs everywhere.

Yeah, I realize looking back that I made it seem as though there's a DVD of Try Me Again, but I'm not aware of one. I was referring to the other VHS/DVD everyone was talking about, I think maybe the video version of the CD you mentioned. But man, the title track of Try Me is a fantastic tune. And there's a song called "Seeing Over" -- :eek: It's unlike anything I've heard (not that I've heard very much gospel). It's basically a sick fusion tune with Kim singing some amazing gospel melodies over the top. Just. . . WOW
