Gospel Bassists & Music???

If one wanted to pick up one album with Andrew Gouché, which one would be the most interesting from a bassists' perspective?

I say try Bishop Paul Morton's "Let It Rain" The Intro to "Blessed Jesus" is impossible and the the runs in "The Just Shall Live" will make you wanna practice more.

"Pages of Life" is slammin', but you should also get "Purpose By Design". The song "I Want My Destiny" is one of my all time favorite Fred Hammond basslines. "I Press" is simple, yet funky. There are several others of note on this CD.

I second Mario's mention of Bishop Paul Morton's "Let It Rain". Even though the title cut is a fairly transparent lift of "Purple Rain", the music is still great and Andre' Gouche is solid. If you like watching gospel groups on DVD, the DVD ofr this one has a lot of feature shots of Gouche.

Other DVDs I like are Isreal & The New Breed's "Another Level". Terrance Palmer is on this one. Bothof Donnie McClurkin's DVDs ("Live in London & More", "...again" ) are excellent concert videos.

The Commissioned Reunion is also a slammin' DVD....Fred Hammond AND Marvin Sapp on the same stage....I seem to remember that Fred even plays bass on a few songs .

steve huff is a monster who because he moved into production in the mid '90's is not talked about enough.IMO he set the stage for gospel bassist who play in more of a funk/r&b style

Any of his albums.... he has the BADDEST Bass Players...

And there was a cat named Sam Scott Jr..... used to play for the Mississippi Mass Choir. A couple of songs that come to mind are Hold On Old Soldier and It Remains To Be Seen, & I Get Excited. You cop those lines, and I'll be your groupie....

yeah he played on all the classic tommys stuff.in the early '90 he started to play on the chicago funky jazz set(took some gig's from me truth be told)later he went on to tour and record with R.kelly.after that he started producing records for R&B and hip-hop artist under the name steve"stone" huff

this album is sick...she had 2 bassplayers - maurice along with volley craig (one of detroits best bassplayers)...volley switches back and forth between live bass and keybass, which sounds great along with maurice. she also had 2 drummers playing for most of the recording...one holding it down and one doubling the pocket and playing fills...and everything fits together extremely tight. that band was just on another level!

O.K., I DID see that one, and you're right, that band is SLAMMIN'!! I'd LOVE to hook up with a group like that one day. Heck, I keep buying gear like I've got a gig like that right now....I'm just waitin' for the phone to ring!!

Kim Burrell always has a tight band, I wonder if that's her "musical director" role or if she demads that level of "band tightness" or what, but she's no slouch vocalist. If she plays something to teach her band what she wants then she's got to be murder on a piano or organ or something..... Twinkie Clark is another one that if you REALLY want to hear a tight band, give her latest album a listen. Don't know who's on bass, but she's on the B-3 and the vocals are tight.... Albums like these make "black gospel" or "choir gospel" unique and stand out. It's demanding on a level like no other.
