Got an Affinity JV

Picked it up on ebay. It's on '07 model, was hanging in a small guitar shop on Missouri all this time. The shop owner put good pots in it and wired the pups in series/parallel via a push/pull pot as the neck pup volume.
Got it for $185 shipped plus a brand new Fender gig bac (still has the tag on it.

One little snag...it showed up with 2 huge dents in the paint. I don't mind so much as I bought it as a "beater bass" while my USA L2500 gets some TLC.
The seller and I are working on getting an insurance claim with the shipper. If we get some refund, he said he'll give it all to me. If we don't, then oh well, I still love this bass!!!

I posted before about how incredibly surprised I was at the sound of this bass that I just had to have it. The Series pups sound fantastic as a slap-tone setting.

I'm waiting on a black abalone pickguard from WD music, should be here any day.

I love the sound of this bass so much that I'm in the middle of converting my Deluxe Active Jazz V to passive, with the same series/parallel switch. The Active is defretted.

I replaced the bridge, because I felt that the original one just sucks. Since my Active JV came with a badass V, as well as the stock bridge, I put that stock bridge on the affinity. Gave it slightly more string spacing (was 17.5mm, now 19mm) and I actually installed it straight (it was slightly off-center from Squier).

All in all, it is an amazing bass, and I'm very happy with it, even though I had it for only 2 days. It's funny how a good setup changes the sound of the bass, too. After I adjusted the action and pickup height, it sounds 40% better than when I got it. Now I just need to set intonation.

now for pics:

I don't know how the one at the heel could have happened. The box has a small dent at the body dent, but not at the heel...it's as if the shock of the body dent made the paint chip at the heel. Must have been a hard hit!. But everything is fine, neck is straight & all.

this bridge has an entirely different hole pattern, so I had to drill new holes (all 6 of them). The good thing is that THIS bridge has the same hole pattern as a Bad Ass, in case I ever get one of those.

...so I hear that Duncan Quarter-Pounders sound REALLY great in these basses, huh?....;)

Nice score Ed! As you already know, I've got three of these & I really dig them a lot! Matter of fact, the passive tone of the Affinity Jazz V was the catalyst I needed to sell off my active jazz bass & go with an AM Standard as my main instrument. I still play these a lot & get a great enjoyment from them still. I have & will continue to use these on gigs, especially the ones that I don't want to drag out the Am Standard (brutally hot or just a brutal bar :D). I find the stock pickups to have a great aggressive character to them with strong lows & good, cutting midrange punch. Congrats again!

I just installed the Black Abalone pick guard from WD music. I bought one that fits a MIM jazz V. All the screw hole "pretty much" line up, within a millimeter or 2. No need to drill any new holes. Screw the screw in at the needed slight angle and it will find a home.
There is but a 1/8" gap between the bottom of the neck and the pickguard. But on a black bass, you can't see it unless you're looking for it closely.

also, notice that I'm in the middle of "repairing" or covering up the dents in the paint.

I painted the area black using a small crafts paint brush and am building up the thickness with clear nail polish to try and get the finish as close as possible to be "level" again.

Ohhhh - NICE! Great choice on the Abalone/Black combo!

Thanks for posting the pics - I agree, the MIM guard does look great without the truss rod notch being on the guard. It's good to know there's a better alternative than the MIA jazz guards. Looks like I may need to upgrade the ones I've got. The small gap hides real well with the particular color combination you've got going. Plus it's kind of in a shadow area too - right at the base of the neck. The unfortunate shipping blem is hiding real nice as well - good job.
