Coincidentally I do have the second biggest reach of anyone I've ever met besides Matt Mcgrory. My piano teacher pointed out I had the same reach as Elton John at 12. They aren't freakishly big or anything, just big and I stretched them from childhood.

Cooler than my first bass! I had a black Peavey Milestone III and a Peavey Deltabass that lasted through high school. My second bass in 8th grade was a blue Peavey Fury II, which was my first active bass! They sounded terrible, but they were all sturdy enough to live through my adolescent tantrums.

Eh... Guys, I've been playing guitar and various other instruments (including bass) for 13 years, so I'm pretty solid in the music theory/notation/ear department. This is my first time *owning* a bass, but "this ain't my first rodeo," so to speak.

Not that I don't still have plenty to learn.

My first bass was a Peavy too! Black Foundation.loved it. I broke the neck in a month doing dive bombs by bending the neck. Probably don't try that.

So here is a question, WHY did you want to play bass?


I had a smashed finger that i thought was too wide for guitar, but now my ring index and pointer are all the same length, I think it makes me faster. You can see it in the pic, second finger 1Hurt learning because I have no pad, just skin to bone. I didn't even know what a bass was, we went to the music store and it was either that or a bassoon. Thank goodness they talked me out of the bassoon. For real.

How cool! :) You do seem to have a bigger reach than usual, especially between thumb and first finger. Very handy - no pun intended - for a musician!

I like to explore moving lines that reinforce the harmonic structure of the song, and I feel that bass is a more natural platform for doing that than guitar. It works on guitar too, but feels a lot more satisfying on bass. It's, like, all low and sexy.

Edit: I also like how you kinda have to dance to play bass right. You feel the music more in your body. Does that make sense?

The new Fender Rumbles are very cool. The older ones are not to my taste. The Hartke Kickback 12 combos are also very flexible as long as you don't need volume.

Then, if you want something really hifi for you neck-through active, there is an EA iAmp 350 combo in the classifieds.

Never heard it put better! Here is a tried and tested hint, when girls come to watch you jam, have them sit on the bass amp. Low and sexy is right.


Edit.or dudes if that's your thing, I forget to be inclusive. Works best on chick's tho.

Ha! No need to be inclusive on my account -- I "prefer the company of women;" though seeing as church is my main venue, I'm not exactly looking for my next sexual conquest either. ;)

Congrats on the new bass! That one looks pretty stout for a first... very nice.

My first was a Peavey Fury back in the early 90s and I still use it. My parents got it for me because it was cheap as hell and they weren't confident I'd stick with it (I really didn't until more recently). Turns out it's pretty sought after these days as a solid P-bass alternative.

You may be already familiar with this, but John Entwistle of the Who would put French Horn licks in his playing. If you haven't already, perhaps go check out some of his bass lines.
