Got my first "real" amp. Few questions

Hey. I just got my first real amp. It is a Hartke 3500 with a 210 hartke cabinet. Picked it up at music-go-round for 300 bucks. Heres a picture of it: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] First off, do you think I got a good deal? It has the Hartke 3500 mosfet amp which seems to be a really good amp especially compared to the newer 3500s. I have played around with it and it sounds pretty good but it sounds kind of "dirty", almost like it is being overdriven all the time. Is this normal? It sounds like that with both the tube and solid state preamps. I think it may have something to do with the tubes or something. I am playing it at low volumes when it does this. I am also considering replacing the tubes. Would the JJ Telsa ones work well for that? It also has a someone smoky smell to it when you play it. I'm guessing this is from it being played in a bar or something, but I'm just wondering if I should be worried about it. I'm also wondering if anyone has any specs for the cab. It seems to be older and I've tried searching for hartke 210 combo which is what it says on the front but I havent come up with anything. Also wondering if I decided to sell the cab and get a new one how much I could reasonly expect to sell just the cab for?

looks like the speakers were replaced.

They look like Peavey Scorpions (which in my opinion are better), but the installer may have screwed something up in the wiring.

Ahh good call. They do look like scorpions. If I open it up what exactly should I check for? I'm pretty new to the amp scene so any help would be appreciated.

Yeah the wiring does look homemade. It appears they just replaced the speakers. Do you think it could also have to do with the fact im using a really crappy cable that came with my bass? I cant find my good one.

A crappy cable could be the culprit.

Also, with the wiring..........

I am assuming that the 10's are 8 ohms each, and should be wired parallel.

Make sure that they are properly connected to the positive/negative so that you are not out of phase.

There should be either:

Two red wires and 2 black wires coming from the input jack (one set to each speaker)

OR

One set of red/black from the input to speaker number one, then a red/black pair jumped from speaker one to speaker two.

Thats not good !

Are the bolts on the magnet tight ?

If so, it may be do for a recone. Peavey sells replacement baskets for the scorpions just like the black widows.

You also may want to just replace them both.

If there is a speaker problem, I would try to get some cash back from the store though.

I have a 3500 210 combo. The speakers are fried, so I pulled the amp out, and am using it to push a 215 Kustom refrigerator in a practice space. Four screws and the amp slides right out of the combo and slides right into a rack. Great little amp for the money!
