Double Bass GR carbon fiber bass cabs

I have no personal experience with these cabs, but it seems to work really fine... here are some reports (in german) and the active version of 1x10 seems to be a real insider tip...:P

Welche Box(-en) für Kontrabass???

I might have found that my 1x12" cabinet doesn`t sound right for me as it has rear bass reflex so I might order a 12" cabinet from FMC which would fix both problems (acoustic and electric bass). But I have tried with an active PA speaker (Morgan PA DSR12A, I guess not specially good) with 12"...

A couple of thoughts, based on my experience. I owned all the different GK micro bass combos (200MB, MBE, and MBS. They sound quite good but are infinite baffle enclosures (sealed boxes) so they cannot driven at much more than 150-200 watts. When I tried my 200MK powered extension with the Walter Woods MI-100-8’s preamp it didn’t work, well it worked but it sounded terrible. The MBX cabinet is very light but you cannot get one anymore unless it’s used. The GR Bass AT Cube Acoustic combo is a whole nother ball game. Great sound, great features, microphone friendly, great EQ. One caveat is that they need a U.S. warranty service company. Mine’s a second hand one, and it’s going out on a majority of my gigs. The cabinets are on the high price end.

I had an older 500w GR Bass cab, still very light, passive 2x8 with horn with carpet cover. Very nice cab, but for me a bit too much bass! Full Circle - Alix - QSC k10.2 PA speaker sounded better to me than Full Circle - Acoustic Image Focus 2 - GR Bass 2x8.

The 110 is most "normally priced" out of the GR cab line. I've bought 2 actually (a 8ohm sold to buy a 4ohm), 1 from bass direct UK and 1 from Thomann. When I bought them it was a similar price ($700-ish) to similar 110 boutique / bougie options -- Aguilar SL110, Trickfish 110, Genzler 10-2, Barefaced One10. So at that point the weight savings (half the weight of most of those cabs) really sealed the deal. There are cheaper options from Trace Elliot or Warwick but their low power handling had me skeptical.

The RevSound 110 looks like a better complete package including price ($450) BUT my priority was definitely weight.

I think the larger GR cabs are very cool but the price tags start to pull away from reasonable / justifiable.

The one issue I've had with the AT110 is the rear porting, some rooms dislike that.

@Ed Fuqua I wish GK would just continue making that cab, looks perfect.

So far I haven’t had any issues with the rear ports on my AT Cube Acoustic. It’s a 12” driver with dual ports. Could be that makes a difference. I’ve always preferred cabs with front ports until I got this one. I always have a Ampwedge tilting the cabinet upward. Just my take however.

P.S. I’ve set a Gallien Krueger MBS amp/cap combo alongside the GR AT Cube Acoustic. IMHO the GR is just a huge step up in EQ, Power, and Features. Just my take however.

And I was inspired by these builds and requested to have a 1400w version built (only 34lbs) and have the AT212 slim (23lbs). They are amazingly powerful and great sounding cabs. Although I do not play double bass.

Hey Ric, I am interested in this cube with the amp....I am getting sick of pulling my shoulders out schlepping heavy gear and hooking it all up, but (since I own it and it is HIFI and boutique and expensive) I am loathe make any move in this direction unless I am going to get a box that at least approaches the sound of MAS-P gear with a Felix. What say you about the comparison? I see that you are getting rid of the Jule poweramp and MAS18 but I think you still have the 18P and felix. Can you compare? THanks

I have Ben Ralston's 8 ohm AT110. It is a GREAT flat doublebass cab. But as was stated above, although the cab doesn't get super loud, it sounds fantastic for 80+% of the club or restaurant jobs I do.
I am having a 1x10 350 watt 4 ohm cab being made for me by Jorg Schroeder and should be here in a week and a half or so. I just need it to do what the GR box does, but able to handle more juice. Should be very light.
But yes, the GR Cabs are a good, flat, non-colored doublebass cabinet that work great on the job, and are light and tiny!

I have the AT cube 112-350 active cabinet, which works great with your favourite preamp (I have the Headway HE2). I lift it up, tilt it upwards and move away from the walls if the rear porting causes boominess. It´s difficult to find a suitable carrying bag for it because of it´s cube shape. Fortunately it´s super light.

I also purchased the (wooden) GR cube 110 combo. It fits the cajun bag but is a bit heavier than the AT combos, still lighter than my GK 200MB combo. And it sounds great! I A/B/C tested it with the GK 200MB combo and Mark Bass mini cmd 121 combo. The GR cube 110 sounded clearly best to my ears. I haven´t liked the sound of the tweeters with double bass before but now I was especially delighted by the very musical and soft sound of GR tweeters. I still cut the highs heavily on the amp though :)

Probably. I take my Genz Benz Shuttle 3.0-10T with me inside the cheap Thomann Cajon bag (spell correction changed it to cajun first too). It is a bit high, the other recommended light ball bag is easier to carry, but also three to four times as expensive. So I kept the cajon bag and sent the light equipment bag back.
