Grammy Disillusionment - When Did it Hit You?

I used to watch for the performances. Most Grammy performers of the past 30 years or so simply don't move or intrigue me.

not really! the nominations (e.g., for performance artists) are likely following (or leading) trends that may be obvious, but there's no predetermined winners/losers like there is in pro wrestling. that said: some artists, in some years, in some categories, could be considered "foregone conclusions."

i was a voting member (and a professional member at a different time) for some years: the process is/was very stodgy and up-and-up = lots of paperwork (voting) to be filled out and submitted according to protocols and deadlines. there's tons and tons of politics, hype, BS, "freebies," and the like (hey --- it's showbiz!), but sorry, no cheating!

It still holds all the appeal to me it ever did: If I meet a musician who has won a grammy, or even been nominated, I'm impressed. Cool, good for you!

Watching the show itself has never been interesting to me, but some entertainment can be had from a grammy viewing party of some kind. Really anything that might expose you to music you've never heard before can't be too bad.

The bigger question is when where the Grammys relevant? I'm sure there was a peak at some point.

I'm nearing 40 and have never watched the Grammys. My first thought is CDs you used to see for sale at the register at Starbucks in the 2000s...those are Grammy artists, right?

The only award show I remember my generation watching was the MTV music awards, and that lost its edge 20 years ago.

Not predetermined. I dated Henry Mancini's PA for a time. The nomination packages and voting for the Oscar's and Grammys are a real big deal. Now it is always questionable who gets nominated and how many nominees there are (more bloat). And in the end, it is an incestuous group of people and $$$ rules (or at least strongly influences) each step and choice.

One time I got behind a car with a tag that said GMY X 2 and for a minute I wondered which Grammy winner I was behind, but then I realized it was someone's grandma.

I can't watch any of the awards shows, no interest in watching a group of millionaires congratulate each other about how what they do is "Import-ent!" It's disposable entertainment, not cancer treatment. Plus, I'm an Old Fart, and don't recognize half the acts up for awards anyway.

Before my disillusionment at 15, I never watched any of the award shows. Way past my bedtime. I just read the papers (remember newspapers?) the next day and was excited when a song/artist I like won. I never have enjoyed the actual award shows. Not then, and definitely not now.

In my teens, I did not appreciate that the awards were geared mostly to kids like me, because we were buying the records. I am guessing that in the end that is all it was ever about and all it still is.

I’m moderately disgusted by all the major awards. Emmys. Oscars. Grammys. It’s about favors. Relationships. Who’s done right by the people who “matter” in the industry.

you know, i was excited to be a part of it then, but i totally get the sentiment of many/most in the thread. i feel the same way. i don't even watch it. my wife does.

The bigger question is when where the Grammys relevant? I'm sure there was a peak at some point.

the grammys haven't been relevant to me for edit: 20-25 years. i just got onto other things with music. i could care less about the grammys --- i'd rather catch the super-bowl halftime show (how could you top prince?). but it was a time in my life, an era, it came and went.

The Grammy disillusionment started for me after Neil Portnow claimed that female pop musicians needed to step up. Obviously he didn’t know what he was talking about.

At least Harvey Mason Jr. runs the recording academy now and knows what he’s talking about.

Maybe it shows your age, but look at the best new artist category to find out when you actually don't know the artist - since 2010 I only know of two of the artists that won it, Meghan Trainor and Billie Eilish.

Awards shows are nothing but an opportunity for a bunch of pampered celebrities to pat each other on the back, (I was gonna describe it differently but I would have surly gotten myself kicked off of the forum) Awards shows are meaningless BS , how the heck is one song better than every other song ? Music isn’t sports where there is a winner and a loser , music is subjective entertainment.
