Grammy Disillusionment - When Did it Hit You?

To be honest, I have no idea. I doubt I've watched it since High School, and not even sure I did then. That was in the 1980's.

Today's thread on Rock vs Pop got me thinking about charts, popular songs, trends, charts, and awards.

I remember there was a time I couldn't wait for the Grammys to see if my favorite song was nominated or won. Then, at some point I became jaded and disillusioned. I attach a list of the Major Grammy winners over time:

I find recalling excitement from the winners from 1966 to around 1979. I was between 2 and 15. Those prior and after? Meh. As years go on, Meh for later releases has turned into active dislike.

Do others track their love of popular music to a period of their life?

Sounds like someone's getting old.

So glad this didn't turn into the usual old farts bashing younger acts and not understanding why people don't like (insert your year from 1965-1985 here) anymore.

I could care less about the Grammys, Emmys, Tony’s, People’s Choice or any other award show. Having never won even nominated in over 50 years of faithful service in the industry, I’m boycotting them all!!

I don't know who has won the Grammys in the past, but I was born in 1990 and I've never paid attention to them. I've never cared for pop music, and I feel no need to care. I'm unfamiliar with any current top 40s and I find most of it vapid and insufferable when I hear it. Maybe I'm just an old man at heart.

I agree. I never watch them anymore. To me, those shows are just a bunch of self-absorbed people patting themselves on the back in public. Just a lot of music business BS that's not worth paying attention to.

Of course. My brother and I got transistor radios as presents in 1963...little things the size of a Walkman (or a really fat cellphone) that ran on a 9V battery.

With a mono earplug so we could listen to late night AM radio by hiding the radio under our pillows.

Then all day we'd be tuned in to the local top 40 stations, at the time in Hartford, CT the big stations were WPOP (the call letters tell it all) and WDRC.

Who knows why we didn't have to put new batteries in the things every day, but we were just in time to hear the first Beatles singles a few weeks before they showed up on the Ed Sullivan show and blew our minds. We also heard surf music, Nat King Cole, Motown, Dean Martin, the Ronettes, Sinatra, the 1910 Fruitgum Company, the Stones, Peter Paul & Mary, Bob Dylan, Tom Jones, Jefferson Airplane, Petula Clark, Cream, Roger Miller, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, the Chipmunks, Johnny Cash, Freddie and the Dreamers, on and on...that was the soundtrack of my life from 10 years old to 15 years old. Then we got an FM radio in our bedroom and stopped listening to top 40.

My only other exposure to top 40 was when I was in the Army from age 20 to age 23 and heard Armed Forces Radio playing Casey Kacem's American Top 40 countdown show in glorious AM mono.

So 1964 to 1977 were my pop music years. By 1980 I was spending most of my time listening to non-commercial FM stations and today I stream them...mainly jazz and folk. When I see the Grammy lists in the paper, I haven't heard any of those artists.

I thought it was cr@p when I was in high school during the late 70's. I know of nothing within the intervening decades to disabuse me of that opinion.

Raised in the 70s and 80s it was never a big thing. The Oscars were more interesting. But I can certainly imagine from 66 to 79 it being a lot more interesting since that was a creative time for music.

They have a music awards night back in my home town, which is just a bit of social fun and a chance to see some of your peers perform. At best, the winning stuff is just a chance to show some public appreciation to your peers. Harmless enough but lost in translation to outsiders.

I don’t think I’ve watched this century, but I’ve heard about winners. It sounds like things have become worse….
