Grammy Disillusionment - When Did it Hit You?

I've always been a contrarian POS so I never put a lot of stock in the Grammys. However, that said, the biggest upset in my lifetime was in 2000 - as much as I enjoy Steely Dan, Two Against Nature shouldn't have beaten both The Marshall Mathers LP and Kid A. Shelby Lynne (who?) winning "Best New Artist" for her sixth album over Jill Scott was also a misstep that year, but not nearly the way Two Against Nature was.

The best part of the Grammy's is the night before , when the "real" awards and performances are allowed to take place . The crap they have showed on network tv the last 30 years ......I pass . When Miles Davis lost for Bitches Brew back in the 70's, he walked out ........everyone should do the same .
If there's a 5 way tie in our house, sprinkles for all... but the consolation prize is still ice cream.
To answer, it's been many years since I've seen any award show... which I think is amazing, given their broadcast rate of every other week.

The awards aspect has always been pretty lame, with the voting usually years or decades behind the times, or overly safe, or both. Not caring about who wins means it's hard to be disillusioned. Maybe as a kid it meant more...
However, I'll tune in every year or two and some times there are great performances. (The Daft Punk/Pharrell Williams/Stevie Wonder/Nile Rodgers mashup in 2014 was fun and Nathan East was killer.) I almost always find some new music I like and was unaware of, mixed in with a decent amount of so-so crap. So kinda like music in general...

The last time we watched the Grammys some guy with one glove was doing the moonwalk.
My distant cousin Hans Hugo Harold Faltermeier hasn't won anything since 1986 so I am bit disappointed.
Also, taking the Grammy away from Milli Vanilli was total hypocrisy. If they used that rule today, half the nominated singers would be disqualified.

Of course, it's always been a promotion for the recording industry, and I'm OK with that, and occasionally there would be moments where it was really special, the night Prince grabbed hold of Beyonce and made her WORK with him sticks out.
It was never on a 'gotta see it' list, but my wife was an Amy Winehouse fan, so the last one I watched was whenever it was that she won several awards. It was heartbreaking and disgusting to watch: She was onstage in England I believe, and every time she won, they'd re-connect the live hook-up to tell her, and her look . . . . she was obviously very, very sick from prodigious over-indulgence, and it killed me to see anyone like that . . . . while getting a standing ovation from the house in Hollywood. Those g**-******d vultures were just thrilled, and then to pan to that camera with her standing there in obvious distress was all I could take, thank goodness I didn't pull an Elvis and shoot the TV, it was that bad.
Screw the Grammies, one more grim reminder, kids, that Dere's No Bidness Like Sho Bidness ! ! !

I think I liked the MTV awards for a couple years back 20 years ago, but yeah

I don't know if the Grammy Awards are run similar to Oscars, Golden Globes, etc. If it is, here's a clip from a TV show called Adam Ruins Everything. Entertaining, fast moving, a little over 5 minutes long. Kinda goes along with what some folk in here, who've mentioned connections with these things, have said.

Have you played a battle of the bands? “Winning” is who you know not, about how good you are.
pro tip; being a member of “social clubs” will do wonders for your ability to win not just battles of the bands or awards shows… all around in life the price is very steep at the end though.

Even as a kid I was pretty skeptical of The Grammys but when Peter Gabriel's So didn't win anything at all in 1986 I checked out for good.

I turned off the TV in '89 when I heard "and the winner is Jeth...." and haven't watched since. MTV was amusing, maybe, until the first non-music thing came on; out! Even though the R&RHoF is only 70 minutes away, I lost incentive to got about ten years ago. I think a lot of it was them having the awards in NYC in stead of Cleveland, but then between those loosely rock-related folks that came in, and the ones that were left out, I lost any faith I might have had in it. We did go there two years ago, the early exhibits were wonderful, but the further up in the building/time we went the less interested I got.
Now I'm just getting older and more bitter and I'm proud of it.
Anecdote: I used to know a guy quite a while back that's dad had so many Grammys that there was one on a hall table used as a paperweight when you came in the front door. But those were earned and deserved well over a half century ago.
