Grammy Disillusionment - When Did it Hit You?

One poster above mentioned that when the Grammys were launched there were like 1/3 of the categories that exist today- that alone points to a musical landscape that’s a lot harder for them to process and assess than it was 40 or 50 years ago

I don’t really think that’s true. I think it’s more that the award “categories” (which were already largely considered a joke back in the later 60s and 70s) were simply broader.

The proliferation of award categories on one annual award show is not an accurate indication of the musical landscape of that era. It’s more like it was that one award show’s management indulging in some politics and hairsplitting to justify creating more awards in hopes of somehow increasing its relevance. Sort of the same idea as what’s behind handing out participation ribbons. As in: Everybody gets one!

The Oscars went down the same road.

Today's thread on Rock vs Pop got me thinking about charts, popular songs, trends, charts, and awards.

I remember there was a time I couldn't wait for the Grammys to see if my favorite song was nominated or won. Then, at some point I became jaded and disillusioned. I attach a list of the Major Grammy winners over time:

I find recalling excitement from the winners from 1966 to around 1979. I was between 2 and 15. Those prior and after? Meh. As years go on, Meh for later releases has turned into active dislike.

Do others track their love of popular music to a period of their life?

I used to look forward the the Grammys, Oscars, MTV awards, etc. until they became political. Stopped watching all of them. I'm so out-of-touch with today's celebrities I simply don't know who most of them are anymore.

In 1969, Blood Sweat and Tears' debut album beat out Abbey Road as Album of the Year.

I never cared about awards shows of any sort, so the Grammys didn’t matter to me. What do I care whether other folks like the music I like or not?

The Grammy's, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees...for that matter, have no bearing on what I prefer to listen to or perform. I am "older" and am out of touch with a lot, if not most, "popular" music today.

Actually their second album...their now largely forgotten first album was nominated in 1968 but didn't win. In 1969 they won two Grammys and nominated for two more.

Time has shown that their first was far and away their best even though it wasn't a chart topper. But one song made it on to their Greatest Hits LP of the 70s.

Agreed. It's a great album and far superior to their second, which was practically a new band altogether with David Clayton-Thomas taking over for Al Kooper.

Industry awards are self-congratulatory masturbation. And when publicly broadcast, nothing but another marketing channel.

Decide your own preferences before somebody decides for you. Or, to loop in a large part of this thread “you can do it your own way, if it’s done just how I say”.

I’m in my mid 30s, and I sometimes like the artists and music recognized by the Grammys. I’m much more likely to enjoy “Album of the year” nominees than “record of the year” nominees, though.

- “Random Access Memories” by Daft Punk
- “Morning Phase” by Beck
- “Golden Hour” by Kacey Musgraves
- “Folklore” by Taylor Swift

These album of the year winners been some of my favorite albums of the past 15 years.

Let’s not forget badass bassist Esperanza Spalding being recognized as best new artist in 2010, either!

Always a gimmick, but 2000 I think it was… Steely Dan (while I love em) beat out Radiohead’s “Kid A” for album of the year…. That was certainly an eyebrow raiser for me, as while both have their merits, Kid A was a rather innovative album at the time.

Ain’t it funny! The band themselves thought otherwise. Not that the Al Kooper stuff was bad, it was definitely hip. But the band saw potential greatness. They ejected creator/founder Kooper, brought in a classic voice and arranged themselves around that voice (DC Thomas)….. and soared into the stratosphere.

I also have never paid attention or even watched a single Grammy show (or any award show for that matter). I'm pretty sure that the Oscars are about movies and Grammy's about music but that's as far as it goes. I'm not claiming any sort of moral high ground here, it's just not something I've ever found interesting.

In fact, between the years of 1974 to about 1985, I didn't own a working television set.
