Grateful Dead?

anyone know if a band score or bass line Dead book besides just hunting down tab?

Thanks!

Songs

I use this all the time. Full chord listings for all Dead tunes. Then I just go ahead and work out a bass line based on that. That being said there are full score books like Anthology Vols 1 and 2 that will have most studio stuff written out in standard notation.

This is a type of Grateful Dead book that should help you start playing more like Phil.

I read that book many times over... Very helpful, but not for playing.

If you really want to play Phil stuff and play it like Phil, the easiest way is to start listening and playing along with what Phil is doing (using the chord charts above will definitely help get you in the right places). A score is only going to cover the studio stuff, which to my ears doesn't really sound a lot like Phil.

Also, pick an era. The bass lines evolve and, while there is a consistent feel to them, the way he dovetails into the rest of the band is completely different from one era to the next. My own theory is that it is relative to the keyboard player at the time, but I'm not sold on that.

The song discussion forums at rukind.com are a great resource for some of the songs with the "signature" bass parts being discussed and broken down, but there are a wealth of things that are not discussed.
