great cheap basses

what are some cheap brands/basses that produce exelent basses for the money? stuff thats good to mod into an awsome bass with no worries.
how are the SX and Jay Tursor basses?

I was amazed by a schecter bass someone had bought. I played it and i could not believe the price and sound of it. felt really nice too. A really nice fenderish sound for a very good price. i think he paid under 500 for it.

I love my G&L Tribute L-2500 5 string and I paid less than $400 shipped new (it was on clearance). You can find one used for less. Here's Ed Friedland showing one on YouTube:

It's 9 minutes of showing all the sounds you can get with the electronics.

Some of the old Ibanez Roadstar basses are really good. All they usually need are some decent tuners. Also, and I believe it's been mentioned, Yamaha has produced some very good cheap basses, a great many of which can be had for about a hundred bucks used. Very much worth picking one up if you need a bass and don't have much cash.
I also dig my little Epiphone EB-0. As long as you don't get a dog, those are fun little basses.

I can't find a Tribby for under about $1100 here in Aus (that's like $1000 US these days)...:(... for inexpensive instruments, Australia just flat out sucks!

Hit the pawn shops and look for Korean or Chinese Squiers. Stay clear of Indonesians.

Actually, best watch out for the Korean stuff from the early-90s. I had a Strat from that period and it was a ply body. It was that period of Korean build that effectively devalued the Squier name, IMO, coming off the back of years of high quality Japanese production.

I just purchased a ESP LTD B155DX for $335 in FM see-thru blue. It sounds FANTASTIC with passive pu's/active 3 band EQ. Nice hardware, and fast neck (16mm string spacing). It has a very clear/crisp punchy sound. I have also owned an Ibanez SDGR5 & three 4 string Roadstars, and a G&L & Fender 4 banger. Check it out-the picture doesn't do the finish justice.

The best inexpensive basses I've played are probably Peavys and Dean's. If your looking for the best bang for the buck, look at a G&L Tribute, however they are somewhat more expensive. The Tributes are far above everything in their price range.

Totally agree on the dean. I`ve bought one dean edge 4 just for fun couse it got good reviews on the neck.

Well, I switched out the preamp with obp-3 and pickups with nordstrand noisless jazz pups. It`s a really good bass, great wood, good low action and intonation, I would switch the stock electronics and pups though. Pups on the dean edge 4 are a bit muddy and the preamp makes it all more muddy and it`s difficult to cut through the mix.

Technically it`s a good bass!

I have my share of cheap basses.

A Brice 6 string that is a nice bass, paid about $300 for it, could use better pickups. The Rogue 6 string looks almost identical to it...probably is.

A Galveston 8 string(unpaired) which is an amazing, high quality bass for $500. I've read that its made at the Dean factory. Plays and sounds great, only real problem with it is the bridge doesn't have individual string height adjustments. I made shims out of guitar picks and have killer low action on it now. Its my main bass at the moment.

Also have a 10 string(unpaired) Tennessee bass that is a piece of crap...good thing I only paid $200 for it. Stay away from Tennessee brand instruments...these turds also go under the name Starfire.
