Great gig cut short by a fight.....

LMFAO!! I had to look it up too.

Urban Dictionary: bogan

'bogan

A fascinating beast. The majority of the species are hideously repugnant and unintelligent, and yet they manage to breed in ever-increasing numbers and populate an area known as the outer west. It is quite common to find five or six offspring in each family group, often with a different father for each new baby.

Their habitat consists of a weatherboard or brick-veneer dwelling and is characterised by an early-model Holden or Ford in the driveway surrounded by a group of males discussing why the carby is stuffed and the results of last night's footy (a primitive gladiator-like spectator sport enjoyed by most bogans).

The female of the species, while smaller in stature, is far more loud and aggressive than the male. While the males tend to be very friendly and congregate with other males, the females spend most of their time in supermarkets and shopping malls, using a shrill high-pitched call to discipline their children and contact other females.

Males and females rarely interact socially except during breeding season, which is otherwise known as Friday night. During this time, females are allowed to enter the male-dominated area known as "the pub" and display their impressive coloured plumage to a prospective mate.

Herein lies an intersting phenomenon. Males will often fight over a particularly attractive female and she will mate with only one male, while some less attractive females have been known to have several partners simultaneously."

No fights, at least none memorable enough to come to mind to tell stories about.

But did have a bit of violence at one gig that turned into a really long night for us. Somebody shot and killed a dude right in the parking lot, right by our trailer. Big place, nobody inside had a clue, and it had no effect on the show.

But we go to pack up our gear, and the area around our trailer and vehicles is surrounded by crime scene tape. Of course we can't load up, or drive away, or anything. Had to wait for the cops to get done scoping everything out. They did give us the tape when they were done, and yes we strung it up in our practice space.

Found out later on the news that it happened right before we started playing, and couldn't have been more than a couple minutes after my wife and her friend showed up and walked right through there. *shudder*

So to prevent this do we outlaw murder, trailers, gigs or wives?
Lets get those politicians busy on this!

My story sort of tame compared to some of these, but nevertheless ...

Playing one of our regular spots, a bar that's been around since the 70's with clientele to match. It's usually pretty lively and I've seen some pretty incredible drunken depravity, but no real violence. Somewhere around 1a (3rd set) I see a couple of local cops come through, following some guy outside. Next thing I know there's a scuffle in the entryway, just on the other side of the door behind me to my left. Turns out one of the customers for some unknown reason decided he didn't want to pay his $34 check. Didn't walk out on the check, just said, "no, I'm not going to pay it", and then stuck around on the dance floor. The manager talks to him, but to no avail, so he calls the cops. Apparently the guy gave them a hard time right after he walked out, because they ended up tazing him, hence the action I saw outside the door. Anyhow, we kept right on playing, although the drummer was looking over his shoulder at the brawl outside and I had my back turned to the audience for most of a song.

The manager told me the details later. The guy has been there before, so the waitresses know him. He owns 4 or 5 restaurants, and clearly can afford to pay, but just decided he wouldn't. So instead of paying a $34 tab, he gets tazed, hauled off in an ambulance, arrested, about $1500 in fines and court costs, and oh yeah: it's Sunday morning so he probably doesn't even get arraigned until Monday.

I've had a couple of close calls, including one night when we did our fastest packing job in history to get out of the place before the brawl that was brewing all night actually happened, but that's the only time I've seen an actual fight .... so far.

There was a stabbing at one of our normal gig spots on one of our off weeks a couple of years ago. Over a woman (of course)... All 3 were regulars and had been there when we played last. Right in front of the stage too. Same club, I had a drunk pestering me all night to sit in for a song using my bass. Finally, during first song, 3rd set he comes up and starts reaching to grab my bass... I'm 6'5 and go 350 on a good day... I played a G&L2500 at the time... I hit him in the head with the body of the bass, put it back on and kept right on playing... Never even went out of tune. Bouncer looks at me, shrugs his shoulders, smirks and drags the guy outside to a waiting cab... Afterwards, I chewed him out for not tossing the guy earlier despite me and a few patrons complaining. Guy spent $600 on drinks and wasn't driving... He did get banned though and that wasn't the first bar he'd been banned from.

A few fights in my checkered band history. I hate to stereotype, but they've all been biker bars.

Most recent was a fight in the lot - all we saw was the place empty out, the cop cars arriving. We got photos of us playing with the police car lights in the window behind the band, posted them on the band's FaceBook page. Next time we played there we got the story - one guy was in Hell's Angel's colors. He was out dancing, causing no trouble at all, just having a good time. Some one else decided to be a "big man" at tried to pick a fight with the guy in colors. Well, he was accompanied by a couple of guys not in colors. When things went too far they stepped in. Bouncers did what they do, but a brawl started in the lot. Guy in colors took off as the cops were approached, don't think he was really involved except as a target and a spectator. Guy that started it all went to the hospital, then to jail. Not smart to start fights when you have warrants.

A different place I used to play had fights all the time, and it's only a block from the city police station. First one I saw there involved two guys. I looked up and saw one guy pulling the shirt off the other. I thought that was a funny thing to do, kind of gay in a way. It was a fight. Bouncers did what they do - one out the front, the other out the back.

Different night much more recently we let a girl sing with the band. Later another gal sang with the band. Then the first, then the second. Next thing you know these two girls are fighting - the big one (5-8, 160) takes the small one (5-3, 110) by the throat and slams her into a pole. Next thing you know there are 20 people fighting on the dance floor. We can't have guest singers there any more.

There are more, but three is enough for now.

Biker bar in Garden Grove, California – ca; 1962 or so.

Hessians, HAs and Diablos all called this bar neutral turf, so it was always cool.

I was playing in a Surf Band and at that same time I owned a chopper shop in Newport Beach where I customized and built HDs for these same guys all the time. I personally rode a Kawasaki, and pretty much the bikers looked out after me wherever I was wherever I rode. After all – I had built or repaired their bikes at one time or another.

Anyway – some jerk comes in wearing a tan nylon windbreaker jacket that said 'To Hell With Biker Gangs'. Not cool --- not in a biker bar anyway.

Said idiot tries to start a discussion with some guys flying HA/San Berdoo colors. Seems he wants to rag on the bikes in the parking lot – all the while we are in a break between sets.

Idiot pulls a gun and it gets ripped out of his hands by another biker standing right behind him and they all go out into the front lot to 'discuss' what I guess is gonna be his last stupid action.

I heard six shots and I figgered the idiot was dead or at least out of the gene pool (think about it) but we quickly finished our break early and started playing FAST.

We got pretty shook and I'm not sure we were even playing the same song --- and then the cops showed up, which was about 20 seconds later. I guess someone had already called them.

Well --- nobody was shot or killed. But the Honda 360 'motorcycle' he arrived on had six neat holes through the engine cases. The gun and the rider both were nowhere to be found and nobody knew 'nothing' and we went on with the show from there.

I checked the paper for a few days to see if any bodies had been found face down taking a mud-nap in the back-bay – but I never saw anything at all. He just vanished somehow. Somewhere.

There never was any real trouble in that bar – but those days are long gone now I guess.
