Great jazz basses besides fender?

And for the questions about why I don't want fenders. Well, I'm just not too fond of the p bass headstock, it's just too generic for me. I'm also recording an album next month, so something that can bring out that jazzy tone with a hint of metal can really light up my day.

Lots of good choices given. If you can find one a Japanese ESP J4 is a nice J bass and in your price range. I had a mid 90s...wish I still did.

I really like the "Jazz Style" basses that Lakland makes.
I especially like the DJ-4. The slightly smaller body is very comfortable for me.
It seems to be my favorite bass and goes to most all of my gigs.

I just picked up a 2006 German Warwick Corvette active 4-string (bubinga/ovangkol), and I'm really impressed so far. It has a more modern Jazz sound, and with the 2-band preamp and the ability to switch to passive, it fills in a big variety of tones. QI also like that the neck is thicker than a lot of Jazz basses that I've owned. They tend to be heavier than some other brands, but mine is just over 9lbs. The quality on my German model is definitely above the 3 Warwick Rockbass Corvettes that I've owned, and used ones from that time period sell for around the price of a new Rockbass model. The oiled finish models do require a bit more maintenance to keep the wood from drying out, but it shouldn't deter you from trying one out. Also, with current German Warwicks selling for Big $$, the slightly older models are a comparative steal!

I really like my Brubaker Brute jjx-5 bass, would recommend it for metal too. It plays well with my bass soul food for a tad of grit, although it could benefit from a booster.

Okay, if I find one around $1000 I'll grab it. Other than that, at the moment I have my sights set on a Spector Legend Classic 5 Holoflash

The holoflash is a crazy finish. It definitely stands out in a crowd! I found my Warwick for $700 used locally, and that seems to be the going-rate for this era of Corvettes. There may be one for sale now at that price in the classified forum.

EDIT: TB'er Yaphet has a Corvette $$ for sale for under $1,000. That model has coil tapping, which allows you to run 1/2 of each humbucker, and it should give you a good approximation of a Jazz single coil.

Try reverb.com. There are quite a few German and/or Pro Series Corvettes on there right now, including this fine specimen.

Fernandes gravity 5x. I own one and it sound pretty cool. it's passive and it has a nice punchy sound. it's a shame that these basses are a little rare to find. you can find them on ebay or the fernandes guitar shop. they should continue making these basses. another awesome bass that has jazz pick-ups is a rockbass corvette basic. recently I've been checking out these basses on a couple of youtube clips and they sound pretty cool. I would like to try them if I get a chance to go to a guitar center.
