really sort of a strange poll, since you don't list any of the amazing (truly) great classical, bluegrass and jazz players.

john mcglaughlin is better than anybody listed in your poll

al dimeola, wes montgomery... all great

nashville has 100 guitar players who you have not heard of that are better than all on your list (don't get me wrong, clapton and hendrix were great, listen to them all the time)

tommy emmanuel (sp.?) is truly amazing

assuming we limit it to great electric guitar players of the rock genre and say from 1960 to present, i think any poll which fails to list JEFF BECK and (the great, the immortal) ALVIN LEE (of ten years after fame) is just a joke.

as far as right now, i also think any poll which fails to list JOE BONAMSSA is also seriously deficient.

there is also ROBERT FRIPP of king crimson. not seen him mentioned, but a fantastically gifted guitarist.

RORY GALLAGHER- someone once asked jimi hendrix what it felt like to be the greatest guitarist in the world. he said (and i am paraphrasing) "i don't know...go ask RORY GALLAGHER"..... enough said.

you need to go back and listen to some real guitarists and then do another poll.

CURT COBAIN was not even worthy to carry JOHN MCGLAUGHLIN's equipment! maybe he could go out and run errands for him or something, but to even have cobain's name listed, i am afraid, just shows how woefully ignorant you are of truly great guitar playing.

BEST- John Mcglaughlin...jazz, fusion
RUNNER UP- Alvin Lee...rock
HONORABLE MENTION (and if someone says they are the greatest, will not argue)- Jeff Beck & Robert Fripp & Rory Gallagher

/s/ Dave

ps- anybody that cares to, go listen to the song 'WOODCHOPPERS BALL" on Ten Years After's "UNDEAD" album and then come and tell me (hell, or pm me, i welcome a chance to talk publicly or privately to any of my TB friends) he is not truly the king of rock guitarists and i'll...i'll... well, i don't know what i'll do, but i will be surprised. that song sums up ALVIN LEE for me

There's Tommy Emmanuel and then there's everybody else.

This acoustic electric player from Australia is really not that well known but search out some of his stuff on YouTube and Google him. Nobody can play like he does.

+100 And there are alot of other players that should be on the list. Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani,Edward Vanhalen, Steve vi.Steve lukather. ....Just my opinion!!!!!

David Gilmour couldn't solo in 7/4, thats why they change the time signature to 4/4 halfway through Money. There are so many killing guitarists that STILL have yet to be mentioned.

Wayne Krantz or Bill Frisell anyone?

Go buy 2 Drink Minimum by WK or East/West by Frisell and then come back and tell me who the best guitarist is.

To those of you saying names like Tommy Emmanuel, John Scofield, Eric Clapton, Trey Anastasio, Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Joe Bonamassa, Santana, etc etc.... thank you all for the laugh!

9 pages and I'm the first person to mention John Scofield?????
Amen, brother. I'd have to put it out there for Charlie Hunter as well since he plays that crazy 8 string contraption and can stand up to alot of bassists and guitarists all by his lonesome; "simul-magical-lee"!!! :)

I also saw some fantastic videos of Carol Kaye playing guitar on youtube, she's just as smokin' on guitar as she is on bass!

No Ritchie Blackmore?
Alex Lifeson?
No Brian May or Alvin Lee or Peter Green or Eric Johnson or Satch or Vai or Malmsteen or Paul Gilbert or even Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads? Jeff Beck? Stevie Ray Vaughn?

How about players like Tommy Emmanuel, Stochelo Rosenberg, and Django Reinhardt, Al Di Meola, Paco de Lucia, John McLaughlin?

There are many more, but I'm so disgusted I can't think of them.

Anyhow, for those of you who are familiar with Django or interested in jazz guitar, check this out: Rosenberg Trio - For Sephora - YouTube

"His single-string technique combined with amplification helped bring the guitar out of the rhythm section and into the forefront as a solo instrument."

All your favorite soloists followed him.

RIP Charlie.

Indeed. Very cool! :) I know this is off-topic, but with the guys you listed, and with the Nashville players mentioned too, you might like these two guys.

Dizzy Fingers - Chet Atkins cover by Rob Bourassa - YouTube
Matt Larson plays Guardian Angel by John Mclaughlin .avi - YouTube

They're both geniuses, they both give lessons and they've studied together. They're just local guys (each lives in a city on either side of mine), but probably the best players I've ever heard in my life. And, they're both multi-instrumentalists. The first is Rob Bourassa, and the second is Matt Larson.

I genuinely hope you enjoy them; the second is my favorite.

Um... Neil Peart is a drummer, I'm guessing that you were talking about Alex Lifeson.
