Greatest Mod Ever

I'm used to playing Ibanez basses, and have switched to Peacey Millennium BXP's. I miss the 24 fret fretboards.

So I got to wondering how much it might cost to get the fretboard extended on the G string only, and to whether it would be worth it or not.

So I grabbed some card stock paper, a paper clip and some tape.

Now I know I really appreciate noodling up in the second octave.

Hopefully someone can make this mod real, instead of card stock, tape and a paper clip.

Are you hoping that someone would be willing to make this for *your* bass, or that someone would create product like this you could order from a website?

Might be kinda cool... but each one would almost have to be a one-off....due to the multitude of different body to fingerboard height dimensions.
Not to mention break angles....

I suppose there could be batches made up for specific brands/ years/ models....

This, plus different scale lengths, and the length wood at the heal of the neck past the last fret would pretty much make this impossible to mass produce. But it would be a pretty easy job for a tech to make a one off.

Also, It wouldn't be the greatest guitar mod ever, because the best mod ever is 4 way switching on a Telecaster.

"Greatest mod ever" is certainly a subjective statement - I think it's the finger ramp.

4 way Tele switching adds a major tonal variation that makes a basic Tele much more versatile tone wise, keeps its stock appearance, and still retains the stock tele sound. The same can be said about series/parallel switching on a Jazz.

That's the beauty of differing opinions and requirements. I would rate a ramp as the "greatest" mod because I like playing with them so much and don't have a desire for extensive on-board tonal variation. The OP is right. You are right. I am right. We are all right because "greatest" is no objective.

Just curious, what exactly makes playing with a ramp better than without? Ive used both, and with my play style I dont really notice a differe ce.

I play predominately with my fingers, and don't do a lot of pop/slap technique. I love the feeling of the ramp underneath my fingers. I find that it assists with greater playing accuracy, speed development, and a lighter touch. When playing a bass without one I feel likes there's a chasm underneath the strings.

I play fingerstyle as well, but I guess I play more on top of the strings, because when playing over a ramp, I never really came in contact with it

That too, switched with a push pull pot to keep the factory look. Everyone that I have suggested the 4 way switch on a Tele have been blown away by how big a difference it makes and how useful the series option is for their overall tone.

I put a mini humbucker from a Firebird in the neck position of my Tele. The 5th position was neck pickup with a cap to roll off highs when I used heavy distortion.

After thinking about it some more, the "greatest mod ever" was the Dan Armstrong switching setup I put in my G&L Skyhawk. 3 mini toggles replacing the 5-way switch in a Strat-style guitar, yielding 11 pickup combinations ... most of which are useable.

Sounds pretty complicated though, to be greatest it has to be user friendly.
