I was at Guitar Center today, browsing the used basses. They had a BC Rich Warlock up on the wall for $99. This bass has a split coil pickup with a V/T pot configuration. Rosewood fretboard. Also yes, this is the pointy bass, the stereotypically "metal" one. I was playing through some kind of used Acoustic amp or something.
The first thing I noticed was the neck. VERY comfortable. This bass was one of the easiest playing basses I've ever played. The rosewood was a bit "bright" and you could see the nice figuring of the wood. The bass basically played itself.
The body was actually fairly comfortable, despite the pointyness. This was a very light bass.
The sound was impressive. In some ways, it was less punchy than others P's. But the strings seemed a little old. Ultimately it had a rich, soft sound.
Certainly I'd take off points for cosmetics. Ultimately, though, this was one of the best surprises from Guitar Center I've seen in a while.

A Schecter Ric copy... wasn't really that impressed.
American P-bass... nice maple neck, not overly impressed with the sound. I think the P-bass sound is probably the most consistent from pickup to pickup, so while this wasn't disappointing (hey it's a great sound), it wasn't special.
Various Squiers... I have no specific comment other than to say Squier has really upped their game.
Of all things, there was a Gibson Grabber there. How cool is THAT? I didn't really like it, though. Still, was nice to see a unique instrument.
