Welcome to TalkBass! :woot:

At a glance, it looks like a legitimate Made In Japan (MIJ) Fender Jazz Bass Special, similar to the model Duff McKagan played on "Appetite For Destruction". The "E" serial number does match up with Fender-Japan's 1984 to 1987 production runs. If I remember correctly, the finish came from the factory in a Pewter color, but over time, it changes to that cool metallic green hue.

Nice bass!

Calling the Fender experts - the pole pieces look oversized, especially on the J pickup. Almost like QPs. Did these basses come with those pickups, or are they aftermarket?
Yes they did, the large pole pickups were earlier in the run, and are generally thought to be better sounding than the later small pole pick ups

edit - Makes sense, it has a bent plate bridge also, which were also used early in the run, hard to tell from the pic, but it looks like it has the F caps on the knobs, which is a win. Looks legit to me from the provided pics

You know, I never understood why they called that a Jazz Bass Special when they built it on a Precision Bass body. I've seen lots of P-basses with a Jazz pickup in the bridge position. Anyone know why they decided to call it a Jazz Special instead of a Precision Bass Special? Just have always wondered about that. I wouldn't wonder at all if it was on a Jazz Bass Body, but everyone I've ever even seen pictures of is built on a P-bass body.
