Hi, all! I'm a new member from NYC. I joined up because every time I looked for bass-related information online, a TB thread was always near the top of the list. I've actually been playing guitar for about 30 years, but a few years back I wanted to pick up the bass mostly so I could record better demos in Garageband. Then I decided that if I was going to do that, I should learn to play bass better (instead of "playing bass like a guitarist") and then if I was going to do that I should have better gear!
I started with a Squier VM Jaguar (the short-scale one) which I liked, but ultimately I felt like the short scale wasn't for me - I want my guitars to feel like guitars, and my basses to feel like basses! I think it was an important first step, though, because I'm not sure I could have handled going directly to long scale. But then I got an Epiphone Thunderbird, and just yesterday I got a Fender Jazz Bass Special.
I'm taking classes at a local guitar school, which is a new experience for me, because I'm totally self-taught on the guitar. But it's a really good experience to be forced to drill on scales and chords, and have to play different styles, and to have a teacher instruct you on the importance of rhythm.
