I've been playing the bass for almost twelve years now, and it seems every time I google an answer to a pressing question about the instrument, TalkBass pops up. I thought I'd finally make an account and contribute to the discussions instead of merely reading them.
A little about myself:
I'm from England, give or take. I grew up in the suburbs of London and Paris. I'm a long time bass player. Started on violin as a child, then piano and guitar as I grew up. Picked up the bass as a teenager, and haven't really let go. Got my first fretless at the age of 17, and my second the year later. Went to university to study history, joined various bands. At the age of 19, after playing the electric bass in a jazz band for a year, I picked up the upright bass. Played upright in a ska band and a ceilidh band for a couple of years while I finished my masters.
My upright bass is now sadly dead. It fell on its neck and is now in two pieces. I've been concentrating on my four- and five-string fretless basses for now. For the last two and a half years I've been playing with London-based progressive metal band Carpathia. I went to school with the drummer and keyboard player. The band was formed in Coventry, where they went to university, and they moved down to London in 2010 and picked me up on bass. Most recently I've been playing some experimental big-band "imposition" - somewhere between composition and improvisation - with Invalid Link Removed for his PhD research. So far the results are somewhere between "ew" and "funky!".
