Grossed out by Hefner

Personally (since turning 36), I've lived by the motto of half my age to my own age. Looking back, though (now 47), I had no reason spending any time with an 18 year old. I mean, damn, how sick was I?

You weren't sick at all. You had a standard and you stuck to it. Just wondering... did you actually date any 18 year olds?

My standard is "half my age, plus 7 years" for a partner's minimum age. It's been a good baseline so far, but age is just a number.

In Hef's case, attraction is all about the $$$$ and prestige.

Im curious... how did you arrive at that standard? It seems pretty arbitrary from my point of view. Why not "half your age plus 10 years"?

This rang a bell with me. You may think I'm crazy.....the whole thing would take too long to type out, so I'll just give you the quick version. About 4 years ago there was a woman who was 30 years younger than me. I was 55, she was 25 and it was pretty obvious that she was very interested in me. This was not wishful thinking on my part either because even a dunce like me could see it. All I had to do was ask her out....and maybe nothing would have developed at all...but for a few reasons I just wasn't comfortable with the idea of being with someone who was that much younger than me.

Again, that's just the quick version because I'm at work and I have to go now!

No, I dont think youre crazy. Was the age difference the only thing that stopped you? Did you feel any sort of connection to her otherwise?

Just a question, as Im curious... what if you met a, lets say, 29 year old girl and you happened to have a lot in common with her. Perhaps she's an "old soul" or whatever, but you two happen to have a lot of common ground, similar interest, and compatible outlooks on life. For the purpose of discussion, lets also include that she's a real looker... exactly your physical type. Not only that, but she's interested in you. There is something about you she finds attractive, and so she asks you out. The only thing you take issue with is the fact that she's 29. Would you go out with her?

No, I wouldn't, even though I'd be very tempted to. A thirty-year difference in age is just too much to overcome, in my estimation. Think about it. Thirty years ago I was 29 years old, Reagan was President, Michael Jackson was taking off, and the San Francisco 49ers with Joe Montana were the hottest thing in football. And this girl was being born, and then sucking off the tit. We'd have nothing in common. Besides, a younger man could satisfy her far better than I ever could!

Age appropriate. Works for me!

2 people legally get involved with each other and find their own benefits from it, what's nauseating about it and why does it matter to you?
I have my own set of rules but wouldn't judge others through it. Live and let live, you know?

I agree with you in theory, but with regard to this specific example, I am with the OP. It is a rather disgusting example of exploitation by Heff, and gold digging by the girl -- I guess you could say they deserve each other :)

Well, I'll tell ya. She works where I get my haircut. One day I called to make a appointment and the girl who normally cuts my hair was off for the week. I asked who they would then recommend and they said "Jeane." Not knowing who "Jeane" was (even though I'd seen her before but hadn't met) I said okay. When I first met her I was not only taken by her beauty but also by her maturity. No doubt in my mind that this 25 year old was an old soul. Even though I'm a very shy with women I was amazed at how easy it was for me to talk to her. There was an instant connection because the conversation just flowed from the both of us like we'd known each other for years.

In time I'd go for another haircut with my usual girl and Jeane would be right there evertime saying hello....actually, going out of her way to do so and striking up a conversation with me. Well, in time it was obvious from the way she looked at me and from her talk that she was interested. Hey, I did nothing to encourage this either and to be honest, I was totally stumped by this. I'm a blue collar worker, I'm not rich, I don't drive a fancy car, I'm just a very average looking guy and she knew all of this.

I never got a bad vibe from her....but it just didn't seem right. Old soul or not and even though there was a connection I kept thinking the bottom line is that she's still 30 years younger than me. She's young, she's got her whole life ahead of her and she deserves to be with someone that's her equal. Besides, here I am 4 years later with arthritis in my lower back and my knees are giving me a lot of grief. She's now 29 and is still raring to go with life. She doesn't need some guy who's physically hurting to drag her down. She deserves better.

No regret's on my part either. But I am still amazed that someone like that would even give me a second look. I'll admit, it was nice.

"but it just didn't seem right" - a big yes to that. Many of my friends have children in their late 20's, and I think that's why the idea creeps me out. There's a certain age where it just seems wrong, at least for me. I reckon 10 years is about as far I'd go. Any more, and it would make me feel very uncomfortable. Besides, their taste in music would probably suck anyway.

Mike, that's exactly how I feel about it. Well said! :)

That has been bandied about the internet, probably where he got it.

Yeah, Ive seen it on the internet as well. I was just curious as to what would make someone adopt such a standard.

No, I wouldn't, even though I'd be very tempted to. A thirty-year difference in age is just too much to overcome, in my estimation. Think about it. I see where youre coming from. But, what if you had a lot in common? I see no reason why two people with an age difference of 30 years cannot still have common interests.

Thanks for the story, Mike. Maybe she wanted you to meet her mother? (just kidding)

Ah, now this I can understand!

At 28, this isnt something Ive had the opportunity to experience. My girlfriend is 5 years younger than me, and thats the biggest age gap Ive ever encountered when it came to women and relationships. Usually, I find myself more attracted to older women. In fact, when I met her I thought she was the same age as myself.
When I was 20 I was "talking to" a 37 year old woman. We had common interests and found each other attractive. Then again, 17 years isnt exactly the same as 30.

When people's lives are private that's one thing. But when the relationship exists primarily for the purpose of media hype, I'll voice my opinion if I feel like it. The whole thing is just a sensational parody of marriage anyway, and to give it the same respect as a real marriage is foolish.
