GSR206B Budget Modding

Are those DR strings? I use and like the Dragonskins, which I've heard are Highbeams with their 'K3' coating in clear. High Beams or not, if the colored strings are the same steel strings from DR with colored K3 coating, I'm in the market for some new strings!
Tha GSR is looking good

Yes they are, I'm liking them alot. I'm about to keep all the colors in stock lol. They have a really clean smooth sound. Not as growly as the slinkys on my other basses but they were what I wanted out of the peavy they were on originally and on this 6 I like them for the more mellow tones. I'm going to try to record a before and after with all the changes (bridge, tuners, pickups, preamp) I got the set up really dialed in and it's playing like butter already. Earlier I was running some Techno basslines with zero effects just amp adjustments and it wasn't muddy and I could toss in little runs and fills all the way through the C string.

Well, luckily I'm an exceptional dumb ass, that's not boring...?

Self deprecation aside, I still have months of those dragon skin strings to go (I think...?) and I bought that SR1100 without the justification of selling two nice-ish basses that I haven't put enough use into... You set a good example by making a project out of a cheaper bass

Thank you, glad folks have some interest in it. I really try to diversify what I keep around. I can't justify a collection but I can justify having different tools for different jobs.

So quick update, I was going to do the dowel rod repair but in the spirit of budget went with tooth pick and gorilla glue. I'll give it a shot for now and when I do the body I'll drill it out and do the dowel rod repair. I've started to get some of the parts in, not even half of them so far. The pick up situation is gonnatake a little figuring out. I'm not doing a good job of finding proper sized covers. Contemplating leaving them exposed? But then still need to figure out how I'll secure them. I should have enough parts in this weekend to warrant a disassemble and install. Maybe I'll try vlogging it? We'll see if time allows it (or my kids for that matter).

Well I'm still waiting on my tuners and the other bridge but I have what I need to get started. This bridge is super meaty and it looks like I'll need to route out the body to set this in, it seems like the current bridge is the same dimensions so the template and lining up shouldn't be a hassle. The Black out concentric pot fits the cavity and looks like I'll only need a few simple solders. Now I have to make a decision on what color to use for the body. I have a few ideas so I'm going to paint some swaths on cardboard and set the hardware with it to get an idea of how the colors will mesh with each other.

I like the toothpicks over the dowel because there is more surface area with glue on it... but really, are you going to be using your strap button as a carabiner on your next rock climbing trip? Strap button strength was important to me back when I played a 12 lb. Aria Pro II (the model was Thor Sound... no wonder it was heavy!!)

What brand are the new pickups again?

Why replace the ones in there already?

Great question, the ones in it aren't bad. I'll be dealing with with preamp first and maybe it stops there and the other pickups go towards a different bass? Maybe I'll do a demo with multiple setups.

Record a stock demo, stock pup SD pre, mama pup SD pre?

The mama do not have covers so I'm thinking of using double-sided velcro to test them out and be able to adjust their positioning within the holes left by the soap bar.

Hey guys, I am starting a little thread for my tinkerings with the GSR206B I recently picked up. The goal is to increase the performance of the bass as much as possible on a budget.
This is purely for fun and learning.
I have no idea what I'm doing! But I'm gonna figure it out along the way. I'll screw it up a bunch, learn how to fix my screw ups and share it here. Hopefully it helps someone and I'm sure you guys will offer tons of advice along the way. I'll attach pictures along the way as well.

Now a little of my background so you have an idea of my level (lack of) knowledge. I'm no aspiring luthier nor am I a professional musician. My biggest fans are my kids who are too young to know how bad daddy really is on "his big guitar" and my friends who thankfully don't throw beer bottles at me when I play around them. When I'm not at work and not playing bass I work/ abuse/ race cars and motorcycles. I'm uneducated in this subject matter but not incapable of learning.

Onto the Topic at hand. I'm planning on purchasing one of the EHB1500's from ibanez and I'm debating the 5 or the 6 string. I've never touched a 6 string before but I have recently begun studying theory and extended range seems like a great tool to have around. before I drop serious coin on an extended range I wanted to give it a test run for a few months so I took a trip to GC to get my hands on two basses, an SR 2405 ,similar to my 4 string SR1300 main bass, and an ESP LTD 6 sting. Well they didn't have the ESP despite online inventory saying they did, so i plugged in the 2405 and gave it some jam, sounded great felt great was heavier than I expected. then I noticed this little 206 and figured SR becks don't vary much in size and shape so even though it's their bottom of the barrel model I could get an idea of how much access I would have on the fret board. An hour later in finally unplugging the 206, went to plug the 2405 back in and said nah screw it. it sounded great, felt great, the fear I had about it being over whelming with the added strings and tighter spacing disappeared after the first couple notes. It was instantly comfy and playable. I Grabbed the sales guy to get an appraisal on a bass I had picked up on a good deal (1992 peavey foundation) and turns out I got a great deal and I was able to trade it in and talk the price down on this 206 so it didn't cost me anything out of pocket. (BTW GC isn't doing the 10% off with trade right now with covid, but I got him to give it to me as "open box" something to consider if you're going that route).

I got home immediately put on the neon green eadg strings I pulled from the peavey before trading in (i have a 6 string set on the way for the B and C) and spent an hour or two setting it up making sure everything was snugged up. Went to put strap locks on and discovered the screws from. The factory are a larger guage than the screws that come with the locks. The top horn screw didn't even come close to tightening. So I put the stock button back on. I'm going to fill the hole with epoxy and give the slimmer screw something to bite later down the road. (if anyone knows a reason not to do it this way and can offer a better suggestion please chime in). Next low grade issue is the machine heads, well they're cheap and work but aren't the smoothest, I find myself shooting past and having to back off a lot. I solved this problem in the classified where I found a set of gold take offs from a Tune Bass that also came with some dome and concentric knobs and a bridge! I'm pretty excited about this, they're gold and I would have liked black but for $100 bucks I'm more than happy and the quality and performance increase in relation to the price. View attachment 3907454 I'm going to swap the nut out as well and really get this baby singing. The next area of interest is the electronics.
All you can really do to those is slap a new pre-amp in it. You'll either love it or hate it.

The gold hardware will look killer though.

Ok, so I finally swapped out the hardware and preamp.

I wanted to try and keep the PhatII but without drilling a new hole that wasn't going to be possible so it was replaced with the STC-2C 2 band treble/bass concentric. It BARELY FIT i wouldn't be shocked if it's making contact with the cover, not enough to bend or add pressure it's just that close. I almost thought it wasn't going to fit. I'm actually glad I went this route. Even flat the tone is so much more clear. With added boost and treble it scoops out anyways. It let's me switch the high end shelf that the treble adjusts between 3-4k or 4-6k I left it low, it's a bass.

Tuners came from a very expensive Tune Bass and honestly should be worth more than the bass itself.. There didn't seem to be any weight savings but the pieces are noticeably more sturdy and hopefully hold tune better than the stock stuff. I have one more thing I may do and that is add a hipshot Xtender I have laying around to the E string so I can play any drop D songs quickly. Not really the purpose of this bass but why not? When I traded for the bass I didn't notice the truss cover was missing, I just used some cloth from my wife's craft room to remedy that, i also use it to help with overtones when I need to or in working on taps and trills.

Now to the first problem to solve. The tuning machines came with the matching bridge, I was worried about fitment so I ordered a gold 300 series ibanez bridge as well. And good thing I did. The Tune beidge was way too wide and would not have looked good or fit well within the body of the bass. The ibanez seemed like it would be a direct swap. It was not. It was significantly heavier, taller, and beefier. The top two holes lined up perfect, the bottom holes were off about 3mm. CUR TOOTHPICKS AND SUPER GLUE! It worked once already so I'm gonna send it.

everything seems sturdy and I doubt I'll have any issue.
Stringing it up with this bridge is much easier and the height issue didn't cause issue. The height difference was an illusion caused by the much beefier base of the bridge. Now i have each saddle set at its lowest Nand my action isn't as low as my other basses but it's still 2mm or less at the 12th.
Over all I'm very happy with the outcome and everything was well worth the money. The final step will be refinishing the body. Not sure when I'll get to that but when I do I'll be shielding the cavities and I'll give the body scoop on the back a little more depth for my fat belly.

That's all for now! Thanks for following and there's more to come!
