Guess that fuzz! (Calling Muse and Oceansize fans...)

I like turtles.
I have two fuzz tones that I'm interested in and I want opinions.

The first is 'Shrinking Universe' by Muse - mainly the big slides near the beginning. Using my knowledge of Muse, I'm going to guess that it's either the Animato or the Muff, or a combination. Doesn't sound very Muff-like to me really. If it is the Animato, is a Rat going to get me close?

The second is 'A Homage To A Shame' by Oceansize. When I saw them about a month ago, the only gain their bassist had on his board was a Boss ODB-3. Does it sound like an ODB-3?

Rat will get you close to some of the Animato, by all accounts, but it won't be the same. I haven't heard the muse song, though.

No idea on the Oceansize song, but, you know, if he was using an ODB-3 live, it'll probably do the job. ;)

anything Muse did before Absolution is Russian Big Muff + Clean signal mixed (plus the other million modulation and filters)... at least 95% percent of the time.

Chris had an Animato on his board around the time of Origin of Symmetry. Shrinking Universe was a b-side to Newborn, so it figures that it could be the Animato. Shrinking Universe doesn't quite sound like a muff to me.

oh, almost forgot. There is definetly an Octave down thing going on that sweeps. So, the "basic" Muse bass sound would be Muff blended and octave.

I don't hear an octave anywhere in SU.

My guess was the Animato. I used to think the basic distortion was the Muff but now I've been lately thinking he used the Animato on OoS like he did the Muff on BHR.

I play shows with the Oceansize side project Kong sometimes, and we rehearse next door to the room both bands use.

Awesome! I only got into Oceansize relatively recently. Saw them for the first time in February (the December show that got cancelled), but the guy who's band I play in has seen them about 23 times. Saw Amplifier for the first time just before Christmas as well at their Eternity gig. Both amazing bands.

Have you seen those Rippers he uses? One blonde, one brunette. They're such amazing basses. He waved his manhood at the crowd last time Kong played too. That wasn't so good.

OoS Sound was clean bass mixed with chain B on his Pete Cornish Line selctor going into his LS-2. Chain one of the LS-2 was Animato. Chain 2 could be OC-2 into Muff, or Deep Impact into Muff, or anyother combo including his FM4.The animato was singled out on the board. The rest of the pedals were on another loop, isolated from clean bass with the pete cornish.
