Double Bass Guess The Pickup

C'mon, man...What is the answer?

Okay, okay - believe it or not (I think Francois got it), it’s the Krivo magnetic pickup! I use it on my ply when I play with this loud blues band and it has been a lifesaver. The recording however was a lower volume situation with my Juzek where I think it also performed very well. At least no one said it sounded like a giant fretless bass! I really like the clarity of it and how well it cuts through the mix.

Having said that, I recently have been experimenting with a Tonedexter 2, mostly with the Yamahiko, and getting interesting results.

My favorite though, as in the above video, is the no pickup, no mic, no amp solution - when possible!

So Innovation Braided has enough iron/steel to work with a magnetic pickup?

Well, “dog my cats,” who woulda thunk a magnetic pickup could sound so good! Concerning the Tonedexter 2, I’ve been using it with my upright bass in a loud electric blues band with great results and no feedback. Don’t be afraid to mix in the pick-up sound and play with the saturation and anti-feedback controls. I use about a 50/50 pickup and mic wavemap mix, saturation set to 70-75%, and anti-feedback 20%. My wavemaps were made with the following mics: AMT 25b, Neumann KM84, and DPA devote. I use the first two most often.

Good point... Chrome steel winding over braided nylon. I wouldn't have expected that; my favorite string knowledge source (Gollihur) describes the whole set of Braided as not able to work with a Krivo...

Not as much as the SF but I just raise the G pole piece a bit.
Very nice sluething! The braided G must have just enough metal to work.

The whole mixed set sounds excellent even with the Krivo! ... In the right hands, of course.

Edit: I wonder if Innovation Polychromes G would also work with Krivo??? (Gollihur says yes for the whole set!)

Yes, Polychromes work like the Braided and Honey.

Actually I just bought a Krivo just now. My natural aversion to a magnetic pick up overcome by the ease with which I can blend with another pickup (EAP STAT B) or mic. The EAP blended with an Underwood for example sounds pretty ferocious, if you are playing with a drummer but still want to be heard clearly and somewhat woody.Plus like Earl, I just have a thing for trying out pickups.

I think you may have overtaken @rickwolff as TBDB's #1 gear junkie!

Cool! One way I get the Krivo to sound more natural is to use an input impedance of less than 500k, ideally around 220k. I don’t think it sounds good at 1meg and above.

Thanks Earl. I was pretty sure you had the Stat B as the pickup you were using. I wonder if my Tempera Hybrids are gunna work with the Krivo. (truth is I think am going to put it on my small bodied bass which probably would sound better with that smooth tone.)
As to Rick dunno about that...I think it says a lot about how good that new mic is that we haven't heard much from him lately.

No the Temperas won’t work, none of them.

Yeah I like the Stat probably the best, but I think the Krivo is pretty versatile.
