seriously though, I would'nt even go to GC - I'd call a bass player friend and borrow his
spare rig and buy him dinner to bring it to me.

the cheapest crap they have....you just know it's gonna be messed up (bad action, old strings, missing knobs, crackling speaker etc) so I don't want to have any more in than I have to. Probably a skwyre affinity pre-pack and a $20 mic to get it into the PA .

You have a gig in 1 hour, and someone stole you van, with all your gear. You will be playing in a medium sized bar. You have 1500 dollars and have to find a bass and amplifier in Guitar Center. Tell what bass and amp you choose and why.

I guess i would get a Peavey TNT combo amp, tc electronics spectracomp pedal, and a yamaha bb bass, or Ibanez SR, leather strap, two 10' cords and extra-light gauge stainless steel strings.
The Ibanez and Yamaha have good necks and no dead spots because they are made by CNC robots, I think. Neck has familiar feel to me.
The Peavey is cheap in terms of watts per dollar.
Of course, I would have extra dough, so I would have to spend the rest on my GWAR-like monster costume because it was in the van.

Rumble 500 combo: $600 (Because they are awesome sounding, have some nice built-in options, and are loud as heck.)
Ibanez SR655: $750 (Love the sound of the Nordstrand design pickups)
With the rest, I would buy a stand and some items to do a quick setup. Possibly also a pedal tuner.

If the accessories did not count in the original sale and if sales tax was excluded, I would upgrade the bass to a BTB675.

The above was in the spirit of the original post. The following is what I would really do.

I would go to the local Music Go Round, buy the best bass and amp I could for about $1000 and get them to throw in the strap, cable and bag and I would buy some strings there too. Then, as my local MGR allows, I would borrow some tools, do a setup onsite and get to my gig with plenty of time, way better gear and about $475 in my pocket. If they had a USA Peavey bass, I would escape for a whole lot less.

I would use whatever gear was in the van I stole to get to the gig.

Serious answer: I would probably get some MIM Fender and a G-K amp. I wouldn't have time to give it much thought.
