Guitar Center at it again

I was in GC recently because of a bass I saw on there. I go in and test it out and I was getting ready to buy it and then the salesman tells me it's already been sold online and takes it out of my hands and walks away lol.

Was a nice bass as well. A Warwick Streamer LX. Apparently it was the bassist from Bruno Mars, he brought 3 in and that was the only one left.

Ugh I despise them sometimes. Maybe they did the right thing and I'm just being bitter

Finished reading thread. Still like GC.

my GC experiences here in los angeles have ranged from neutral to really great. no bad GC experiences i can think of, and i've been buying from them since the '70s. there was a sales guy at the hollywood GC who didn't seem to like me, but i can live with that, and years in we're pretty friendly.

sure, there are a few jerks here and there, but where isn't there? when one store's new manager changed their layaway policy while i was paying off something, the assistant manager in acoustics sort of hid the situation so i was able to continue to pay it off. there's a guy who doesn't remember us now at one of our local GCs, which is weird since we bought from him repeatedly, but he put my layaways in the back in cases - i saw them taken out of the cases when we came to pick them up - and i don't go to GC to make friends.

What would a trip to Guitar Center be if they didn't scrap on your dreams at least once?

John5 is obviously very observant. "Disaster" indeed.

I assume this varies from state to state, but, when I lived in L.A. and was doing pro camera retail, whenever we bought a used piece it went into storage for 30 days before we could advertise, display and sell the item. Nobody could place a deposit on the item because until that 30 days was up it basically did not exist to the public at all. That is how it should be done; it is a sad joke on the buyer to allow him/her to put a deposit on something that may end up unavailable anyway if it turned up as stolen.

As long as it is clearly communicated with the buyer that they may get their deposit returned because the merchandise may be stolen, I don't see an issue with it. The buyer knows there's a chance they won't be able to purchase it, the buyer accepts that risk so that they are first in line to purchase it, and if it is stolen then the buyer gets their deposit back. How is this bad for the consumer?

This happened to me with a Peavey 4x10 cab. Was in the process of buying it and then was told it was already sold online.

they hang EVERYTHING on the wall, unless it is fully paid for :/

That makes sense from a business perspective. If someone puts down 100 on a 200 bass if it's not on the display floor no one can express an interest in purchasing should the person who has put down a deposit back out. Given the overheads of a bricks and mortar store slowing throughput of stock is not a good idea. However, ideally the bass might say 'reserved' and not be possible for someone to buy and such a practice used to be the case in many stores but it takes time and effort to do that so that has most likely been changed in favour of up to the minute information via the point of sales system

That's what happen to me. Nobody knew I had put money down. They could have very well sold it to anyone. The bass had just come in on a trade when I plunked my money down. I would have just bought it outright but I had to wait for the obligatory police hold. In spite of this I still like dealing with them, I'm just more careful when I do business.

I put 100 down on a 200.00 bass that just came in one time. I had to wait a week to take possession to make
sure it wasn't stolen. I came in a week later with the rest of the money to get my bass and they had it hanging on the wall for sale! Fortunately nobody snagged it. I was surprised because it was a mint CV 60's Pbass in sonic blue! I had been waiting to snag one of those and would have been really pissed if they had sold it before I got there!
What did they have in mind for your bread?! That's enough for me to go elsewhere (after buying the bass tho lol)

Not my experience. I put a deposit on a Rumble 500 that had just come in and was on the floor. They pulled it, marked it SOLD, put it in the back of the store and gave me my receipt. I had to wait 30 days before I could pick it up because literally it had just been traded the previous night and put on the floor shortly before I walked it the store.

It shouldn't have been available to test if it was sold conversely you didn't own it until you paid for it.
If someone who had played it earlier that day called the store while you were testing it and put a deposit down on it or paid in full with a card then they beat you to it. If you want great an honorable service go to a small mom and pop shop.

I have not had a bad experience yet with them.. this is my last experience with them.. they had it underpriced to boot!
