Guitar Center Rant

heheheh I play metallica riffs, but not over and over and over and they are usually in time:D. And infact I got complimented when i play too so, yah.

I am 16 (just a kid) but i do know what i am playing and know what i'm doing. Albeit I'm not that kid who just goes in to play for the sake of playing, I try basses that I want to learn about and figure out, not loud either usually the salesman puts it louder then I want :D. Lets be honest all of us do it time to time.

Yeah I mean no problem its just when they play REALLY loud with everything scooped so its super bassy and super tinny sounding.
its terrible

Im only 15 but ive been playing for 3 years. yeah i rarely go to GC now, i only go there to try out something for me to buy later from somewhere that doesnt neglect the instruments.

yeah i remember when i used to play that riff that Les Claypool made a cover on, the Awakening by the Reddings.
It got fun then it was really lame. now all i do is just jam out doing slapping, tapping, pickstyle, and whatever.

i just like to showcase how any bass can sound

I loath guitar center! The one in NJ on Rt.22 sucks baboon balls! They have basses on display with missing knobs and I saw strats on display with missing 5 way pick up selector switch tips, having just the raw metal of the switch exposed. :scowl:

And when you want to buy an amp or a bass, they try to give you the display model instead of going into the back and getting one right out of the box brand new! :rollno:

Honestly, the only thing I purchase out of there are my flatwound Chromes, that's it! It's mom and pop shops all the way for me! :smug:

The only thing i ever buy from guitar center is Elixer strings since that is the only place that keeps them readily instock

im going to have a mom and pop store buy me a box of them.

And I might have bought a sansamp from them and returning because i was an idiot :(

Ok let me tell you why :D

Missing knobs:

People steal them. If you want that bass, i'm sure the salesperson will find you a replacement so they can make a sale.

Floor model because we probably don't have one in the back. They usually don't store stuff in the back like amps and guitars. We try and get everything out on the floor. If we do have one in the back, just tell them you want one in the box. If they don't have one, we can order it online for you or find another local GC store that has it in a box to send to you.

The next time you go to a Guitar Center, grab a bass, plug it in and play the bass line to Sly and the Family Stone's "Everyday People."

For those of you under the age of 40, click here to listen - Link Removed - it's a low "G" in an eighth note pattern repeated continuously...it's the only note in the song.

Then, when you're done with the song, pick up another bass, and do the same thing.

Continue for as long as possible.

Notice: Some names have a word that is sometimes used as a derrogatory word, in these instances it is not used to insult a lifestyle, but to insult a major crapola company.

If you can do it in time, I for one wouldn't mind. Listening to sloppy Tool Covers and horrible Blink 182 covers is the worse part of the job :(

It never occured to me that people stole those missing parts off of the display instruments. That sucks. As far as not having the stuff in the back, that also sucks because I hate the thought of buying the display model because millions of people have played the display model such as random people off the street from 13 year old unlearned punks looking for a first bass to seasoned vets. I just think display models have been beat to crap by the general public.

When I come to G.C. and if I want to spend my hard earned money, I want something out the box. That's the reason for starting up the engine and burning $50 bucks in gas fighting traffic to come down there.

Any shmoe can stay home and "ORDER" online. :rollno:

Guitar Center is like any other store.

There are good ones and bad ones.

Some have great numbers but they have bad personalities.

I've chosen to take my business elsewhere.

I spend about $2000 per year on gear and bass related stuff like strings..

for example;

Cherry Hill's store snubbed me on a trade and I took my business to the Atlantic City store in stead.

Cherry Hill probably makes more money than Atlantic City.

But my 2 grand wont be spent in either store anymore.

I found a good new Mom-n-Pop music store in Deptford N.J.

I'll probably pay a bit more for things but I'm okay with that. When I want to make a deal, they know I'm going to make it back for them on everything else I buy at full retail.

Eventually the Wal-Mart of music will go under due to lack of business.

You can hang up a beat up bass that looks like the one Jaco played and ask $3000 for it but the chances of you finding someone stupid enough to buy one is another story.

If you own one of those basses I'm sorry. [You should've given a grand of that money to the poor and bought a new shiny American jazz] :bassist:

Some of the stores will actually remove the 5-way switch tips just to prevent people from stealing them. They keep them in the back and put them on when it's time for the sale.

That's when you pull the "it's the display model" card and get your discount :bassist:

Wow, so today I go in, and I see what I have seen the past couple times, a '76 VINTAGE P bass, on the lowest level of hangers. Wow. Can they be this stupid? I also saw this one kid grab a bass and go to the guitar amps and plug it in. :crying:

Sad day, my friends, sad day.

So you're all cranked up because there was a mid 70's Fender P bass within reach? That's stupid? Guy, it's a mid 70's Fender. Not really a big deal. They aren't exactly rare. If it were a mid 50's or early 60's P, I could see your point.

Considering it was $2200 I wouldve thought that they wouldnt want something that expensive in reach of 5 year olds. Stupid me.

I can't speak for all GCs, but the one in Columbus OH is pretty good. You guys are all bitching about a store that takes expensive inventory and puts it out there for you to try out. You're bitching about stuff being on display without knobs and switches...who do you think ripped them off? I don't think the store manager intentionally put it out there that way. It's other customers just like you that are destroying the equipment because they don't respect the fact that GC has a lot of money wrapped up in equipment that you want to hammer on.

****, when I was a young guy getting into music, every guitar was behind the counter, none of the amps were plugged in. The only way you could try out a bass was to ask a sales guy to get it out...he'd plug it into the only amp they had available for testing basses and you got to try it for 5 minutes if you were lucky.

If you don't like GC, then don't go there. What I'm hearing is a lot of egotistical, rock star wannabes that want to go to GC, show off their talent and expect everyone else to stop and listen. Heaven forbid someone else is there doing the same thing! You saw a kid plugging a bass into a guitar amp...what's it to you? How do you know that's not the sound he was looking for? When I'm in GC, I can always tell the guys that have not played in a band in front of a crowd....they're the ones always pretending they need to take 5 hours to decide if they like a bass or not....it's the only time they play in front of someone else.

You go there to thrash their equipment and then brag about the fact that you bought the same thing on-line for $2.00 less. If you hate GC so much, don't use their equipment. Show some balls and just order it on-line, sight unseen. Try that for a while and GC won't look to bad to you.

Get over yourselves already. Stop going there if you don't like it and most of all, stop whining about it.

If this rant pisses you off, you're the guy I'm talking to!
