I find that most guitar shops keep the more expensive rigs hanging behind the counter or locked up to protect them from idiots. I've never been refused when I've asked to play one.

I went car shopping. Not a single car in the lot was unlocked with the keys inside.

my local gc keeps the more expensive instruments on the top row, about 20 feet off the ground.. i've never had a problem getting an employee to bring one down for me to try out.. but then, i think the Spartanburg SC store is the only good store in the country, compared to most of the rants i see on here every week.

Why is this an issue? If you want to buy a $2k ring and the jewelry store keeps their rings locked in a glass cabinet, would you also be unhappy?

So what? It is true, though, Guitar Center is garbage. The employees are terrible.

As a gainful employee of my local GC, I’m not taking offense to this- but my store’s employees are pretty knowledgable & decent enough. I’ve certainly been to other stores where I felt like the only person in the building who knew anything about instruments in general.

I stopped by a month or three back, and the $1500 Fenders were locked at the neck but $2200 EBMM Ray/Special were not.

I slapped the h3ll out of them!!!!

Same thing happened in my store with the better basses. I told one of the clerks exactly what I wanted to try out and he unlocked three basses for me.
Sure, it took nearly two minutes, but what the hell.

Nope. I’d ask to see it. But at GC they are trained to read your mind and take the bass off the wall before you get out of the car. For that reason you stamp your foot and storm out.
