Guitarists are trying to make us obsolete.

This has been going on since before day-one. The solid body, fretted electric bass was invented with the stated intention of making it easier for guitar players to replace upright players.

It's only fair... I've been trying to make guitar players obsolete for 20+ years.

I don't think they are trying to make us obsolete has much as take up as much sonic space as possible. No one individual guitar player would ever admit this, but it is almost an unconscious thing. Guitar tones keep getting thicker, they record 4 tracks panned all over the place, and they are playing 7 or 8 string guitars tuned lower than a point where bass has a fundamental tone.
Sometimes I think they keep us around to help them pay for stuff and fill in the background while they noodle.

While things like that can add a cool aspect to your guitar sound--as well as the overall song--they aren't the same as a guitar & a bass.

at what point did playing music become such a paint-by-numbers activity? the way i see it, anything that helps an artist get their ideas out of their head and into the air should be seen as a good thing. if anything were to make bass players obsolete, it would be the self-imposed limitations on how to use the tools that are available to you.
