gulp..new laptop required

ok so i need a new laptop....

i see all the stories about how bad windows 8 is so

what do i do?

one of the guys at the shop told me its not to bad as long as you get a touch screen laptop?..

every laptop you buy now has windows 8 already loaded on it which is a real pain, so i cant get out of it

I really like the new models from Lenovo. On Friday I got a Twist from my new job. I just finished a demo of the X1 Carbon. That was really nice too. If you go Win8, I definitely recommend a touch screen.

You can get the Carbon with Win7.

I'm hearing that Win8 should be used for a tablet, not a desktop or laptop.

Avoid it- you can still buy Win7. One thing to note- if you have Win7 and change to Win8 but find that you don't like it, you can't go back to Win7 because the BIOS will have been changed by the new installation, but it can't be changed back. Also, if you use a Win7 rescue disc, it makes changes to that which can't be reverted to original form. I have heard that Microsoft is allowing people to change to Win7 using the key that came with their Win8 OS.

Personally, I think they'll come out with something else for laptop and desktop computers, but it won't go well for Microsoft.

As a previous poster said, Microsoft will be releasing a service pack any day now that will give users an option to ditch the so-called Metro interface for the more traditional Windows desktop look and feel. This was nothing more than Microsoft's attempt to stanch the bleeding to Apple.

A lot of people didn't like the Metro interface (I do, but that proves nothing except I like the interface). I have a Win8 Phone (Nokia Lumia 920), Win8 on my laptop. I agree the current build is clumsy to use without a touchscreen. That being said, it is a better OS, more stable, faster, etc. Being an IT professional I have just about every thing out there (posting this from an iPad, also have an Android tablet, Win7 laptop, have had iPhone, Blackberry, etc) and my opinion is that Win8 is superior, as an OS, to all of them. Now, if I find a couple of G's on the ground I would be happy to try my luck on a Mac PowerBook just to complete my "research". . . .

What? That makes no sense.

A BIOS isn't changed by the OS (Microsoft). A BIOS is made by the motherboard manufacturer. There are programs that run in Windows that can change the BIOS but they are made by the motherboard manufacturer.

The BIOS is NOT changed by the update. Something else may be but it certainly isn't the BIOS.

I've used Windows 8 on tablets and they are great. I don't think I'd like to run it on a laptop without a touch screen though.
