Double Bass GUTS ARE SO MUCH FUN!!!

I had an interesting experience the other night. I played with a drummer I had never met. He was a bad dude but a little on the younger side. After the gig we were chatting and he told me he had never played with a bass player that used gut. He said he wasn't sure how he'd like it. He REALLY liked it. He felt like the pulse was really strong. He described it as a heartbeat.

Guts do that. When I had the velvet/gut mix one time I had to put my amp right under the drummer's throne because we put 18pcs on a stand that's doesn't have much extra room for 5 and he told me the punch was messing with his internal organs. Because I got several compliments from people in the room I didn't mess with it. Call it payback. :rolleyes:

I do miss that aspect of guts but that's also the gig where they sprung the whiskers and it was downhill from there. Back to mittels with the Olive G.

Well my neighbor certainly doesn't like my guts. :hiding:

Love the sound, but I think I'm at the point of wanting to rip them off. Intonation frequently off. I notice that when I listen for the note, the attack makes it hard sometimes to discern if I'm on or not. Seems like I have to record my playing to find where it's off. I don't think I can hide your bad intonation like other strings and curl them into the right place. Or maybe I was often off all along and didn't notice it till now?

They've been transformational for me. I don't think that's overstating it. They have completely revitalized me. I hate to think that such a profound effect can be attributed to a set of strings, after all these years of playing. But it's been the case for me.

Marc's right, too. I felt really good, really comfortable on the first day. I figured, "Cool, this is duck soup". Then, as I played them more, it got better, and continues to do so. Especially with the bow, which I'm really just starting to get a decent handle on. But it does take awhile. I had adjusted my brain in the months before I went gut, and I suppose my hands are learning to follow that sound in my head.

PS... Ben Wolfe is great. He was one of the folks I bugged for answers before I made the switch. He was very kind and helpful.

I've had the Gamuts on a about a month now. The drummer in
our band was the first to notice and compliment the sound,
but last night at a rehearsal I actually had two band members that
have never commented on my playing speak up and say how "pretty"
the bass solo was. After four years with this band that was a first,
really made my night :D

Even though the tuning is a bit more variable than the Animas,
now that they've been on this long its really not that bad. And,
it sure seems like they are improving my playing, although that
seems kinda hard to quantify :hmm:

My drummer also says that he finds it easier to stay with me
because the bass is much "clearer" as he puts it, I suspect it
means the fundamental is just much more dominant. Bottom
line is I'm a VERY happy camper with these strings!!

:D That's true. I live with that. It all balances out for me.

I think maybe drummers like them because the bass is down there where it belongs a little more. Part of the rhyhmic assault.

Or maybe because it sounds a little more like a lot of our heroes who have fallen.

I think it's the same reason most of the bass sounds that catch my ear were recorded a long time ago. That's when the bass earbug got up in my head, so it's natural that I'm drawn to it.

I'm experimenting now as well with the Ebay special D/G guts. So far, very, very nice. Now, if I try Gamuts and legit Kona coffee at the same time, would I be able to explain how I opened my mouth wide, pulled it over my head, and turned my body inside out? Seriously though, I am enjoying the testing. Performing this weekend.
