I was, and am relaxed, Francois.

But, I should be able to defend myself and my opinions without being talked down to by 2 bass-forum know-it-alls.

My first statement was a simple post for my love of guts and the beautiful tone they help upright basses achieve. I know the difference between the two... played steels for years before realizing I've been missing out on gut strings and the tone (the tone I was after). Still have a bass with Steel strings on it.

But, if these bass forum internet tough guys want to bring it..... then bring it. If they don't like gut strings, DO NOT comment on this thread.

(I've been a mod on rockabillybass.com and DBC.com for YEARS and know protocol. So, bring it boys.....let's rock. Or, in your case, let's orchestra)

Actually.....I love the sound of guts, and many of my favorite players used guts (Charlie Haden, Scott Lafaro, PC, etc) I was just reacting to your rude response to Toad, who was just reacting your unsupportable statement that guts are the ONLY good sounding string. If you are going to make blanket statement on TB you should expect some good natured ribbing.

I should NOT of had to deal with any ribbing for making any statement at all.... whether it be 'blanketed' or not. I was rude to Toad because he started the rude. Sorry, I am a man and will defend myself. But, I did make two legit points, maybe that's why Toad left and you jumped in to defend him (which, come on, seriously? hahaha).... there may be more gut players today if they weren't so expensive, weather fickle and easier to maintain.

Maybe YOU and TOAD should read peoples profiles more often before jumping so quick on them and writing them off so quickly on a public internet forum. You act like a ghetto little gangster, NOT a professional musician. (like your profile claims you are)

And, yes, to ME, Guts are the best sounding strings for upright bass. They are an organic material, like the instruments they are played on, and help open up that instrument. Unlike the nasally sound of steel strings, that to my ears, compress the bass too much. I like my bass to be felt more than heard.

How 'bout the local sports team?

Besides the cost the physical adjustment is not for the faint of heart. I've had several pretty heavy bass players sit in on my bass and have some troubles because they weren't used to guts. I really took me 5-6 months to get to the point where I wasn't tripping over myself.

I don't mind the cost if the payoff is there. I'm a musician and my wife is a teacher and we have a mortgage, car payments, and two kids so we are by no means rich but music is my JOB so I don't mind shelling out the $ if it is going to help me improve my product.

It's all about what you want though. I want to punch people in the stomach with my sound. Guts do that best. String ticklers will be lost but guts also have a certain sound that may not be the one in your head.

I saw this thread on the front page, and thought to myself "Hmm, that sounds interesting. As an electronic-only (although I do play fretless) player, I have no experience or knowledge about gut strings. Cool!"

Read though the first couple pages, and then jump to this last couple pages.. What a derailment. At least I know that you guys over on the DB side of the site aint too different from us on the ELEC side.

I know you are trying to moderate here engedi, but I have to say that toads comment was pretty out of line. Maybe if he was normally such a fun loving, joking guy, it would be more acceptable. But, he acts above others and is extremely condescending. He also reminds me why I have avoided this site (excluding the classifieds) for a number of years. Through my experience, bass players are a chill group of people. Always willing to share secrets and techniques. We are kind of the anti-lead guitar player. The attitude of Toad (among others on this site) is a complete false representation of bass players out in the real world.

Toad, you know your stuff. We all know that. So does Ken Smith. But nobody wants to talk to him because of his condescending attitude towards others. Please act like a bass player and help out your fellow bass player. Leave the attitude with the kids at Guitar Center. I know many bass players who avoid this site because of that type of attitude. Most of us are rockabilly/roots/americana/bluegrass players who are off your radar to be taken seriously. Lighten up and you might see a lot more people around here.

YES!!!!! +1 everything you wrote. I'm in the same boat, minus the kids, and guts are worth every cent. (especially if I keep the receipts for tax time!)

Considering the threads on TBDB are like watching grass grow, at least watching some fool get pissy cuz his dignity got impugned provides some entertainment. :p Of course we all know, this thread will get locked, all stupid comments deleted and it'll be back to As the Grass Grows. :rolleyes:

Nah. We had a coupla PMs this morning.... he's just a normal guy with opinions, just like you and me and 'Toad and Pee and Donosaur and Ken. This all went over the top pretty quickly. Stuff gets misconstrued rather easily on the web. Remember my exchange in these forums with Kenny G's bassist a few years ago? LOL :rollno:

I get really annoyed when I come to this site and see people post a comment with great intentions only to see them berated and talked down to! I agree with Kevin 100%, for centuries gut strings were the only type of string available and thus defined this elusive tone that everyone has searched to re-create.

Where did you hear this tone, on old recordings that were made using old tried and trusted methods and materials? Like using gut strings on an old bass? Wouldn't it then make sense that gut strings are and would be the preferred material to achieve said tone? So when a different/cheaper material comes along and changes the sound and approach to the how the instrument is played does that make it right or better? No, it just makes it different, preferred by some, hated by others.

I personally do not like steel strings, they tear my fingers up, have a tone that does not sit well with my ears and wear my hand out. That's just my opinion but I am not going to talk down to toad because he likes steels better. Nor would I feel the need to join the mob to talk smack behind someone else's post. I also never come to the site because of the poor attitude of it's members, especially in the double bass forum. I am not the only one who feels this way but it's never going to change. I prefer the Taoist approach, if you have nothing constructive to add then don't waste the time or energy....keep your mouth shut.
