So, I classify “professional” as anyone who plays for people and makes money. I think very few of us make a living playing music, so perhaps a better term is “semi-professional”. I did a fill-in gig tonight for a friend (was a guitarist in another band I played drums “semi-professionally” with for 12 years…lol). We’ve stayed in touch, so he knows my COVID resolution was to learn how to actually play bass. I used to dabble with it at rehearsals with my old band occasionally, but it was a goof, being the drummer. Anyway, he rings me two weeks ago and asks me if I’m up for it. Of course, I said YES…and wanted some validation for all those hours of practice!
Anyway, we did a set of 14 songs tonight, opening for another band at a private party. It was a mix of blues, classic rock, country and some originals (one of which was a re-worked version of one of our old songs from back in the day). I had an absolute blast and can’t wait to do it again. Things went so well, there’s talk of me doing some more gigs with them.
It was interesting filling a different role in the band. I’ve always been behind the kit, or out front as a guitarist/singer. I found my sense of rhythm useful to help lock in the pocket. That’s one of the things they like about my playing…that, and I don’t just stand there and play the root notes. I locked the pocket, but was also able to get a little creative with my playing and stretch my fingers a bit. Overall, it was a very positive experience. I wasn’t perfect, but after playing other instruments for so many years, I’m able to cover mistakes fairly well.
I just thought I’d share my experience for anyone else who is thinking of making the leap from the wood shed to the stage! Just do it!
