Do any of you guys have Hag Coronados? The early ones c.63-66 with the Bi-Sonic pickups are rare with around 600 four string models in total produced. Ive seen the later ones with the smaller pickups for sale but never with BiSonics in many years of addictive daily gear collecting whjich begs the question of value, as people are ask $2500 for the non Bi-Sonic one. Id prefer to keep it in the collection but I might need to finance another project. Its looking like I wont need to. Yay!
It had a few non original issues when I bought it but now Its ready to be restored.
Missing Tuner: I found a correct NOS Swedish tuner and now all four are correct but it looks new where the others are very faded.
The 2nd issue was the switchbox had been replaced with a control plate with knobs. It allowed a normal V, V, T setup which may likely be preferable sonically as you can adjust the pickup volumes separately. I found an original switch box and havent yet installed it. The 4 switches are; 1, 2, 1+2, and 1+2 reverse. Just volume on the slider, no tone.
The 3rd issue is a VanHalen paint job adding black stripes. The black paint comes off and the red finish stays in tact. I dont know what type of solvent would be safest to remove what I think is black spray paint without damaging the red. Any suggestions?
THe sound: I have flats on it and it punches hard with a classic 60s non Fender sound typical of Euro and UK basses like Hofner, Framus, Burns etc but with a class and authority thats notable anique. Probly alot to do with the pickups. Its a 32" medium scale and has the "fastest neck" so the blurb says which is pretty slender.
