Half Rounds?

I switched to half round when I was recovering from a finger injury/surgery. Rounds were just too zingy to the touch for me. Long since recovered and can play rounds now. Kept the half-rounds on the basses I put them on. Still prefer the feel of half round to rounds. I don’t hear a big difference in tone. Just too lazy to change my newer basses from stock rounds to half rounds.

Solo Bass 55s are more like the Pressurewounds in that the outer wire is "compressed" instead of "ground down", except they're stainless steel.

I had a chance to try them earlier this year. While they did feel smoother than a typical stainless steel roundwound, I couldn't quite get used to the feel of the stainless steel.

The 55s are indeed pressurewounds (it says so on the package and the website), but their stainless steel composition makes them unique. I played Roto 66s for years before switching to the 55s. I switched because the 66s made my fingers bleed on multiple occasions.

I don’t hear a big difference in tone. Just too lazy to change my newer basses from stock rounds to half rounds.

It depends on how much tone is present for me. I don't hear a huge difference compared to rounds when my tone knobs are on full. But when they're rolled back or off, they sound closer to flats.

What bass you put them on is also a huge factor here. I currently have one of my Ric 4003s strung with Rotosound 55s and the array of tones I get from that bass is truly amazing! However, I've also had them on my P Bass in the past. I didn't like the array of tones I was getting on that bass. So I can understand the argument that pressurewounds are "jacks of all trades, masters of none". But it really depends on the bass you put them on.

When I tried the Solo Bass 55, I had the wrong expectations. Just because they're called "pressurewound", I expected them to feel as smooth and slick as the GHS Pressurewounds (Alloy 52), which turned out to be not the case. I gave up on them after three days. Looking back, I realize I probably should have stuck with them a little longer in order to appreciate the unique combination of tone and feel they provide. I might decide to give them a second chance sometime down the road.
