Handgraving and light

I'm going to start building a bass (starting with the neck cuz the body wood isnt here yet)
This a wise desicion by the way?

So here it goes, I saw a handgraved bass (sort of the Alien movie theme) and thought it'd be cool to do that myself, but how do I do it. With Chisels, if so what sizes chisel should I use to get a reasonably detailed result?
Invalid Link Removed (is the link of the bass)

I recently saw a dude with leds in his neck on the side

and Mark king has it on the fretboard. could one combine this, if so how?
Where could I get so called "Fibre-optics"

Thanks in advance!

ok, well. first of all. do you have any carving experiance. if you are not an extremely talented carver, you do not want to attempt this, not on your first build. and leds are probably better left for a later date as well. but if your set on it, there are some great tutorials on how to do the leds

All due respect, I couldn't disagree with vbasscustom more. Experience is gained through experience. If you don't try and then subsequently make errors, you'll never learn through trial and error. Regardless of your technique and/or experience, you can't learn anything new without attempting it.

That said, I'd tackle it with a dremel. There are dozens of woodcarving sites out there - google is your friend. Searching out LED tutorials on this site will also be helpful...

Well you can also carve an alder body fairly easy...my main line of work is custom entry doors and I have been dong a couple of carved doors and although i do most it by hand with a littel practice you coudl knock that pattern out easliy in a day or two.

Just a thought, bu that is what I would do or you could pay me to do it for you...

Good luck

well are you building it out of oak???it has been my expereince to practice on a scrap of what you will be carving....different woods carve different ways some definatly take more work and time than others

and no I don't live in the neighborhd, but I always wanted to go to Holland

I do have nuff oak to make a body and neck out of. But it's about 1-1,5 cm too fat. The wood came from an old table we had.
But a friend has a piece of Acer that he's willing to donate.
But I can make a second body out of that, so I'll prolly go ahead and do that.

So, yes I am making one of oak. If I can get it to slim down.
So oak solid body, and a 1 piece oak neck (unless I'm going to the woodstore soon, which is unlikely) with open headstock.

Do you advise using chisel, or dremel for a wee bit complicated design?
