Handmade Cabs

I had sort of overlooked the Omnis, good point made, although (I may be assuming a lot here) from the OP's general questions a straight forward box might be the easiest thing to start with.

I built a 3-way Omni12 using 2 10" BP102's (wanted a 4 Ohm cab), 6" horn loaded mid, and a super tweeter with variable L-Pad. I'd tried the J12's and was never crazy about them, although they're all the rage on Bill's forum. The O12 is very hifi and articulate. I would classify it as "modern", with plenty of headroom to crank out all the harmonic overtones you would ever want. I play with a little bit of dirt and the supertweeter is ideal, giving that extra bit of sizzle. I always play with PA support, but wouldn't hesitate to use this in a smallish room.
